Philippine unemployment rate surges to 17.7% in April 2020, higher than the 5.1% in
April 2019. This is equivalent to around 7.3 million people with no jobs amid the
coronavirus pandemic.
PH labor force down to 41 million from 44 million in April 2020. Labor force
participation rate at 55.6% down from 63.1%, the lowest since 1987.
All regions reported double-digit unemployment rates. Highest was in BARMM at
29.8%.
Underemployment rises to 18.9% in April 2020 from 13.4% in April 2019.
Employed persons who were not at work is estimated at 38.4% in April 2020 or around
12.5 million people. This was only at 1.1% in April 2019. Respondents said this was
due to the coronavirus lockdown.
