What are the Application of Physics in
Medicine ?
The term medical physics refers to the use of physical principles in
health care and medicines. These can include the theories
associated with amplitudes ,fluid pressure, frequencies, and
waves. Application of these principles can be found in
diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation oncology.
Who and when was application of physics in
Medical Sciences used first?
The historical origins of medical physics are traced from the first
use of weighing as a means of monitoring health by Sanctorius in
the early seventeenth century to the emergence of
Radiology,Phototherapy and Electrotherapy at the end of the
nineteenth century.
Why do we need Physics in Medicine ?
You see physics is a greater help in the field of medicine without it,
we are not able to enjoy what we are enjoying today in term of
treating or diseases. Physics is useful across many aspects of
medicine both in treatment but especially in diagnostic Medicine,
such as X-Ray, Computerised Tomography(CT)
scanning,Ultrasound ,etc.
How has the Application of Physics in
Medical Science used ?
There they became Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI),
Computerised tomography (CT) scanning, Nuclear Medicine,
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)scanning, and various
radiotherapy treatment methods. These contributions have
revolutionized medical technique for imaging the human body and
treating disease.
Computerised Tomography (CT) Scanning:-
• A CT scanner emits
a series of narrow
beams through the
human body as it
moves through an
arc.
• This is different from an X-ray machine,
which sends just one radiation beam. The CT
scan produces a more detailed final picture
than an X-ray image.
• The CT scanner’s X-ray detector can see
hundreds of different levels of density. It can
see tissues within a solid organ.
X-Ray Scanning..
An X-ray is
a quick and
painless procedure
commonly used to
produce images of
the inside of the
body.
• It's a very effective way of looking at the
bones and can be used to help detect a range of
conditions.
• X-rays are usually carried out in hospital X-
ray departments by trained specialists called
radiographers, although they can also be done
by other healthcare professionals, such as
dentists
