Infection control related to IV

therapy
Objective
Every member of health care workers involved with
intravenous will be able to apply the correct infection
.control precautions' to IV cannulation procedure
:Hand Hygiene

It is the most effective & cheapest method of preventing

.infection
:INDICATIONS OF HAND HYGEINE

. Before performing invasive procedures )1

Before taking care of particularly susceptible patients, such as )2

. those who are severely immune-compromised and newborns

Before and after touching wounds, whether surgical, )3

. traumatic, or associated with an invasive device
…CONT
4) After situations during which microbial contamination of
hands is likely to occur, especially those involving contact
with mucous membranes, blood or body fluids, and secretions
or excretions.

5) After touching sources that are likely to be contaminated with

virulent or epidemiologically important microorganisms; these
sources include urine-measuring devices or secretion
collecting apparatuses .
Pathways of Infection
Migration of skin organisms at the insertion site into the
cutaneous catheter tract

Direct contamination of the catheter or catheter hub by contact

with hands or contaminated fluids or devices

Less commenly, catheters might become haematogeously seeded

from another focus of infection
Reservoirs
Patients skin-resident micro flora .1
Equipment .2
IV solutions and drugs .3
Environment .4
Health care provider hands .5
Signs of infection
- Redness (Erythema) and warmth with some fever
- Pain or burning
- Swelling
- Purulent discharge

If any of these signs are noted, the IV catheter

must be removed immediately.
Why microbial environment within
: Hospital different from outside

.There are client with different infections

.There are long term patients have antibiotics resistant

:Factors that contribute to infection

Age

Devices Poor nutrition

Antibiotic
Low immunity
therapy
:Infection Control Measures
1. Hand Washing

Should be performed before and after inserting, replacing,

repairing and dressing an intravenous catheter.

2. Wearing gloves

Wear clean gloves rather than sterile gloves for the insertion and
dressing of IV cannula. Sterile gloves should be worn for the
insertion of arterial and central catheter.
:Cont
Patient skin preparation .3

Use alcohol swab to remove bacteria prior insertion and allow it

.to dry

Disposing of contaminated equipment and linen .4

.appropriately

Safe disposal of sharps .5

Guidelines to be followed with IV
:therapy
Hand washing technique with appropriate washing & .1
.disinfectant materials
.Maintain always aseptic technique during procedure .2
Limit the number of connections especially three .3
.ways stopcocks
.IV cannula should removed within 72hrs .4
.Fluid should not hang more than 24hrs .5
.IV tubing should be changed within 72 hrs .6
