Introduction:
◦ Tidal energy or tidal power is a form
of hydropower that is harnessed by
converting tide energy into useful
forms of power.

◦ It relies on the rising and falling of

sea levels and tidal energy devices
convert The potential or kinetic
energy of tide into electricity.
Principle of tides:
◦ The alternate rise and fall of the
sea levels are caused by the
gravitational forces of the sun and
moon and the evolvement of the
earth. At a particular place, tides
usually occur twice on a lunar
day.
◦ It is known as high tide when the sea
level rise and it’s called low tide
when the sea level falls.
o When the earth and moon’s gravitational field are in a straight line, the influences
of these two fields become stronger causing high tides.

o when the moon and earth’s gravitational field are perpendicular to each other,
their influence becomes weak, causing low tides.
Tidal stream energy capacity could
exceed 500 GW globally in 2020
equivalent to about one-fourth of the world’s coal capacity at that time

Methods
1.Tidal stream generator.
2.Tidal barrage.
3.Dynamic tidal power.
1.Tidal stream generator: Where the
fast-flowing water created by tides
pass through a turbine the kinetic
energy in the waves is directly
converted into mechanical power in
turbine and then into electrical energy
from generators coupled to the turbine
then to the grid. In a similar way
to wind turbines that use wind to
power turbines.
Tidal stream generators are the
cheapest and the least ecologically
damaging among the other methods.
2.Tidal barrage: The
barrage method of
extracting tidal energy
involves building a dam
used to capture the
energy from water flowing
in and out of a bay or
river due to tidal force by
turbines and generates
electricity .
3.Dynamic tidal power: Is a
technology that uses the difference
between the potential energy and
kinetic energy of tides.
A long dams(T shape) are built from
coasts straight out into the sea or
ocean ,uses the fact that ocean tides
don’t operate strictly perpendicular to
the shore, but also flow in parallel to
the shore as well.
During the movement of tides, water
on one side of the dam is at a higher
level than the other side. As this water
flows through the dam it drives a
series of turbines installed within the
dam and generates electricity.
