Data and Equipment

Protection from Power

Interruptions and
Disasters
The ServerRoom and the Telecom Rooms host
important and expensive electrical equipment, vital
to the functioning of Marianopolis College.

It is thus imperative to protect this equipment from

unexpected power interruptions or disasters such
as overheating, flood etc. that could cause serious
downtime or data loss.
Power Interruptions
While a full protection against a power interruption
(longer than 5-15 minutes) should be provided by an
auxiliary or emergency power system or standby
generator, it is common to use Uninterruptible Power
Supplies (UPSs) to protect computers, data centers,
telecommunication equipment.

The UPSs will provide power to the protected

equipment long enough to bring an auxiliary power
source on line, or to properly shut down the
protected equipment. They also provide protection
against transient power events like spikes and sags,
thereby supplying the protected equipment with
clean, high-quality power.
Because unexpected power interruptions or
disasters
might occur over night or during weekends, it is
essential that the equipment used should come with
a
real-time monitoring and immediate event
notification
software, as well as with remote management
capability.
Things taken into consideration
when
choosing the number and the
model
of the UPS(s):
 The equipment that needs to be protected
(quantity, model, electrical specifications,
number of power cords).
 Some of our UPSs are reaching their end of
life.
 Our UPSs cannot be managed remotely
and
cannot initiate prioritized proper shutdown
of
the systems connected.
 Most of our servers are Dell servers.
Our equipment that needs
protection

our system, monitor the physical environment, view logs
and
graphs, and perform administration tasks such as set up
users
and user notifications.
