COMPARISON MICOSCOPE

COMPARISON MICROSCOPE

 A comparison microscope is a device used to

examine the specimens/ samples simultaneously-
side by side analysis
 Create a split view window which enables to
study two different objects to be studied at same
time.
 Used to examine the similarities and differences
between two samples such as bullet, fibres, hair
sample, documents etc
 Plays a vital role in the field of forensics- precise
identification and examination of microscopic
details
HISTORY
 Alexander Von Inostransoff created the first prototype of comparison
microscope.

 In 1925,Major Calvin H Goddard wrote an article titled “Forensic Ballistics”.

 In late 1920, Harry Soderman invented a system of rotating bullets under the
objective lens

 Philip O Gravelle developed comparison microscope for identification of fired

bullets.
BASIC COMPONENTS
MECHANICAL PARTS: OPTICAL PARTS:-
 Base  Eyepiece Lens
 Mirror
 Pillar
 Objective Lens
 Arm
 Condenser
 Stage
 Illumination
 Inclination joint
 Clips
 Diaphragm
 Nose piece
 Body tube
 Fine adjustment knob
 Coarse adjustment knob
 Optical bridge
WORKING PRICIPLE
 Two microscopes are placed next to each other and the optical paths of each microscope
are connected together by the optical bridge. The optical bridge consists of a series of
lenses and a mirror that brings the two images back together at the single eyepiece.
 The user looks through the eyepiece as with a regular microscope, except that a line in
the middle separates the circular view field into two parts.
 The left side of the view field is the image produced by the left microscope, and the right
side of the view field is the image produced by the right microscope. In some more
modern or sophisticated comparison microscopes, it is also possible to super-impose the
view fields generated by the two microscopes.
 The two microscopes are identical and for a comparison to be valid, the two images
produced in the circular view field needs to be at the same magnification and present the
same lens distortion (if any).
 Comparison microscopes are mostly used in a reflected light setting, but a transmitted
light setting is also available in some instances, and fluorescent light settings are found
on higher-end models.
APPLICATION
 Examination of cartridge case and bullets
 Study and comparison of toolmarks
 Comparison of evidences like hair sample, pollen grains, fibres etc
 Comparison of paint chips and glass fragments
 Comparison of bank and currency notes
 Used in questioned document for ink comparison
 Comparison of ejector marks in firearms
 Identification of microstamping of gun firing pins
LIMITATIONS
 Expensive
 Requires accurate handling
 A person using the device must be an expert
