F-16 WEAPONS SYSTEM INTRODUCTION

• The F-16 weapons system is a lightweight integrated system that supports

superior, all-weather air-to-ground attack and air-to-air combat missions.
• The avionics structure emphasizes hands-on, head-up operation to reduce pilot
workload and builds upon the inherent high cockpit visibility.
• Two design innovations have improved the operability and mission flexibility
Displays and
Master moding
The pilot workload is further reduced by an automated system initialization and data
retrieval capability.

1.- MODULAR MISSION COMPUTER
The Modular Mission Computer (MMC) is a modular computer resource designed to facilitate the removal
and addition of functions, performance, and interfaces. The MMC consists of one avionic display set module,
four aircraft input/output modules, three multiplex bus modules, two power systems, one HUD low-voltage
power supply, and two weapons multiplex bus modules.
The purpose of the MMC is to provide the processing necessary to implement
• the Fire Control function
Provide the capabilities to perform Avionics system integration, navigation, air-to-air combat
and air-to ground attack
• Stores Management function
Provides the capabilities for selecting, conditioning, releasing, and maintaining the inventory
of the air-to-air and air-to-ground stores loaded onto the aircraft
• Head Up Display functions for the weapons system.
provides control and generation of the symbology and window data displayed on the HUD
Pilot’s Display Unit (PDU)
The MMC acts as the primary multiplex Bus Controller for the A, B, C, D, F and W multiplex buses. Backup

1.- MISSIONIZED AFT CREWSTATION
The Aft Station Interface Unit (ASIU) enables the aft-seat crewmember (F-16D) to
perform many of the functions of the front-seat pilot, without removing any front seat
capability. That is, both crewmembers are able to react to the situation simultaneously,
under various conditions. The aft crewmember in essence becomes the weapons officer.
The ASIU equipped aircraft is designed to enhance the ability of a crewmember in the
aft cockpit to perform weapon-targeting functions.

12.- INS DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the navigation system is to determine the

position of the aircraft above the Earth´s surface on a
continuous basis.
In an inertial navigation system, acceleration and
deceleration is constantly measured, making it possible to
determine a distance and therefore also a current position.
The Inertial Navigation System (INS) also supplies accurate
data such as speed, attitude and heading to various system
in the F-16.

Honor - Lealtad - Cumplimiento del Deber - Excelencia en el Servicio

12.- INS DESCRIPTION
• The inertial navigation set (INS) is provided by the ring laser gyro and
is a prime sensor for aircraft velocity, attitude, and heading and is the
prime source of navigation information
• provides the weapons system with the navigation data necessary for
weapons delivery
• The INS provides roll and pitch signals to the FCR, attitude director
indicator, and electronic component assembly. It also provides bearing
and range to destination and magnetic heading to the forward and aft
instrument mode select couplers
• Operates completely independent of external reference point.
• Extremely precise.
• Can be use anywhere in the world.
• Low weight.

• is an electro-optical device for display of information in front of the pilot’s eye

• The JHMCS provides the pilot with the capability to cue the aircraft sensor
suite and weapons outside the Head-Up Display (HUD) Field-of-View (FOV)
• provides feedback to the pilot of sensor and weapon data.
• The operational need for a HMCS is to capitalize on the first shot advantage
and to be the primary slaving “sensor”. The HMCS essentially becomes an
extension of the HUD.

15.- ENHANCED DIAGNOSTICS AID.
(EDNA/VIPER)

The EDNA system provides the capability of loading Operational Flight Programs
(OFPs) into various on-board avionics computers without their removal from the
aircraft. In addition to this capability, EDNA also supports downloading and
decompression of flight data for maintenance purposes and in the event of a
mishap.
 The primary mission of the EDNA system is to reduce F-16 downtime by
providing on-aircraft and backshop support of various Line Replaceable Units
(LRUs).
 The secondary mission of the EDNA system includes other LRU memory
operations, associated processing, display and transfer of data to support and
enhance the primary mission. The secondary mission also supports routine
maintenance and enhanced fault diagnostics on the F-16 aircraft

15.- ENHANCED DIAGNOSTICS AID. (EDNA/VIPER)

the heart of this system is a commercial laptop computer, rendering EDNA and
Viper MLV capable of executing other software applications to support
additional missions. The primary hardware component For the Viper MLV, is an
interface adapter (IA).
Do not connect EDNA, Viper MLV, or Viper PMA to any local area or system
networks to inclue dialup services. The EDNA, Viper MLV and Viper PMA
systems will not operate with virus detection or firewall software. Failure to
comply may corrupt operating software resulting in equipment damage.
The viper MLV is used in conjunction with the portable maintenance aid (PMA)
and the interface cable set to perform F16 software operations
