REASONS WHY CHILDREN ARE IN
STREET SITUATIONS

• Poverty - “large number of children are in the streets to help their families
earn a living”
• 2. Economic Migration - “their families have migrated to urban centers in the
hope of starting a better life in the city. Because of their lack of education or
skills, they are ill-equipped to struggle for survival in the city and are once
again trapped in a vicious poverty cycle”
• 3. Displacement due to natural disasters and Man-made displacement
• 4. Family-relationship factors - include break-up of family, incidents of
physical or sexual abuse, neglect abandonment, death of parent or guardian,
and domestic violence also lead the child to find solace, protection among
peers on the street.
REASONS WHY CHILDREN ARE IN
STREET SITUATIONS

• To earn money for themselves and support their families.

• To find shelter.
• To escape from family problems including rejection.
• To escape from work demands in the home.
REASONS WHY CHILDREN ARE IN
STREET SITUATIONS

• Majority of the children on the streets are working thru vending,

scavenging, begging and parking cars
• Children earn little from their work with most earning less than P100.00
per day
• Parents seem to be fully aware of what their children are doing on the
streets, esp. in the case of the younger children. Parental supervision
drops off when the children are older and it would seem among older girl-
children.
• Younger children, especially girls are able to attend schooling. However,
as they grow older, they start falling off school.
