Introduction
In accordance with the pertinent provisions of Republic
Act (RA) No. 7722, otherwise known as the “Higher
Education Act 1994”, and by the virtue of Commission
en Banc Resolution No. 662-2021 dated October 19,
2021 the “Suggested Guiding Principles and Practices
on Peace Education/Studies for Higher Education” are
hereby adopted and promulgated by the Commission.

It is aforementioned that all private and public


education institutions are enjoined to use these guiding
principles in integrating Peace Studies/Education into
relevant higher education curricula.

What is Peace Education
 Peace education is the process of acquiring the values, the knowledge and
developing the attitudes, skills, and behaviors to live in harmony with oneself,
with others, and with the natural environment.
 Peace education is about helping students to understand and transform conflict in
their own lives, in the community and in the world at large. It is part of all learning
areas and is reinforced by people treating each other in positive ways in
classrooms, playgrounds and in their families and communities.
 Peace education is the process of promoting the knowledge, skills, attitudes and
values needed to bring about behaviour changes that will enable children, youth
and adults to prevent conflict and violence.
Goals of Peace Education
• To learn: to cultivate awareness, concern and behaviors that
lead to peaceful relationships, conditions and structures; and
• To un-learn: unpeaceful patterns of thinking and relating and
seek changes/transform people’s mindsets, attitudes and
values, as well as behaviours that, in the first place, have
either created or exacerbated violent conflicts.
Discussion
According to C. Cuga et.al (2020), Peace Education is defined as a process to
promote knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. It needed to bring a behavioral
change that enabled children, youth and adults to prevent conflict and violence; to
resolve conflict peacefully; and to create conducive conditions for peace, even at
interpersonal, interpersonal, intergroup, national and international levels.
In addition, the Peace education is based on a non-violence philosophy, love, mutual
feelings of trust, trust, justice, cooperation, mutual respect and respect for all living
creatures in the world. Therefore, peace education can be interpreted as an effort to
build a community's independence and be able to build their community peacefully
independently also to overcome all problems that are raised. In other words, peace
education places the community (or in this context students) become the main
actors of the peace building and conflict resolution process.
Discussion
The implementation of peace education has emerged in two broad arenas: formal education
(including primary, secondary, and higher education) and non formal education (including
extracurricular programs, community-based initiatives, among others). In each of these, a wide range
of practical approaches have been implemented. Some examples include:
1. Social emotional learning (SEL)
2. Conflict resolution education (CRE)
3. Problem-based, transformational approaches
4. Human rights education
5. Encounter and integration approaches
6. Memory and transitional justice pedagogies
7. Safe schools and cooperative school climate
Laws related to Peace Education
in the Philippines:
These laws provide a framework for peace education in the Philippines. They emphasize the
importance of teaching children about peace, conflict resolution, and human rights. They also call for
the protection of children from violence and exploitation.
Executive Order No. 570, which was issued in 2006 by the President of the Philippines. This order
establishes the Peace Education Program and mandates the Department of Education (DepEd) and
the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to implement it.
Republic Act No. 7610, which was enacted in 1992. This law is known as the Special Protection of
Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act. It defines children as Zones of Peace and
protects schools from being used for military purposes.
Republic Act No. 10821, which was enacted in 2016. This law is known as the Children's Emergency
Relief and Protection Act. It governs the provision of emergency relief and protection for children in
disasters.
Republic Act No. 11188, which was enacted in 2018. This law is known as the Special Protection of
Children in Situations of Armed Conflict Act. It defines guidelines for protecting and rehabilitating
children in cases of armed conflict.
In addition to these laws, there are also several non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) that are working to promote peace education in the Philippines. These NGOs
are working to develop and implement peace education programs in schools,
communities, and other settings. They are also working to raise awareness about the
importance of peace education.

• The Center for Peace Education and Research (CPER)
• The Miriam College Peace Education Program (MCPEP)

Peace education is an important part of building a culture of peace in the Philippines.


These laws and NGOs are working to ensure that children have the knowledge and
skills they need to live in peace.
