HISTORY
-In 2003, Lars and his brother, Jens Rasmussen, along with
Australians Noel Gordon and Stephen Ma, co-founded Where 2
Technologies, a mapping-related start-up in Sydney, Australia.
Google bought this company in October 2004 to create the popular
free, browser-based software Google Maps.

-Google Maps was first announced on the Google Blog on February

8, 2005. It was originally to support only Internet Explorer and
Mozilla Firefox users, but support for Opera and Safari was added
on February 25, 2005. The software was in its beta phase for six
months, before becoming part of Google Local on October 6, 2005.

POPULARITY
-With the introduction of search tools and map movement, interest in the use of
satellite imagery, both for research and personal purposes, has grown.
Along with the uses, sites have been created that seek to create the database of places
known and seen from space, such as stadiums, old buildings, etc.
-Another use that is being given to the service is the exchange of photos (like Flickr),
creating the category of memory maps, in which the copies of the Keyhole images are
used to show the photos of each person's homes or other places of interest.

Using Google Maps with
COVID-19
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those from Mountain
View decided to add a new layer on this disease in
Google Maps to mark the areas with the greatest
increase in cases in recent days, a layer that could be
consulted in the app for both iPhone and Android as a
guide.
This layer that showed the trends of COVID-19
worldwide has disappeared silently, although Google
already confirmed a few weeks ago in a paragraph in
the help of the application.
Google Maps pulled a seven-day average of COVID-19
cases in specific areas to show where the virus was
spreading the fastest, present in all countries that
support Google Maps.

LOCAL GUIDE
Google Maps implements functions to explore
the city in which you are, showing you nearby
restaurants, cafes or attractions, among other
things, so you can make plans or find where to
dine. And of course, as do other services such
as TripAdvisor or Yelp!, it is important to have
the opinions of users who have been to these
sites so that whoever wants to find out can
take into account the experience of others.
GUIDES CONNECT
Local Guides Connect is an online forum where you can meet
other Local Guides, share your discoveries, stay up to date on
the latest products, and much more. You can also suggest
improvements to the Local Guides program and Google Maps
features.
USING GOOGLE MAPS FOR MASS
SURVEILLANCE
By clicking on the blue dot on Google Maps, we
can see nearby places.
We can find out where a person is at that moment.
We may share our location with others.

We can calibrate the compass of the device.

We may report any issue related to the app.

We can save the place where we parked our vehicle.

MASHUPS
Google Maps mashups are web applications
or computer programs that combine Google
Maps maps and services with other data or
content from third parties to create an
interactive and personalized experience.
These mashups allow developers to use the
interface and features of Google Maps to
display geographic information in
combination with other data sets.
