PROTONS

WHAT IS PROTONS

A proton is a subatomic particle

Found in the nucleus of every
atom
WHO DISCOVERED
PROTON?

Ernest Rutherford
The proton was discovered
by Ernest Rutherford in the early
1900's. During this period, his
research resulted in a nuclear
reaction which led to the first
'splitting' of the atom, where he
discovered protons. He named his
discovery “protons” based on the
Greek word “protos” which means
first.
A proton is a stable subatomic particle, symbol p , H ⁺,
or ¹H⁺ with a positive electric charge of +1 e. Its mass
is slightly less than that of a neutron and 1,836 times
the mass of an electron. Protons and neutrons, each
with masses of approximately one atomic mass unit, are
jointly referred to as "nucleons".

The proton has a positive electrical charge,

equal and opposite to that of the electron.

The number of protons in an element’s

nucleus is called the atomic number. This
number gives each element its unique
identity.
