INTRODUCTION

Tourism is one of the world’s fastest-growing industries and a major foreign

exchange and employment generation for many countries. It is one of the
most remarkable economic and social phenomena.

The world ‘tour’ is derived from the Latin word tornus, meaning ‘a tool
for making a circle’. Tourism may be defined as the movement of the people
from their normal place of residence to another place (with the intention to
return) for a minimum period of a maximum of six months for the sole
purpose of leisure and pleasure.

UNWTO Definition of Tourism

"Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places

outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure,
business and other purposes.“

TYPES OF TOURISM

Tourism has two types and many forms on the bases of the purpose of visit and
alternative forms of tourism.Tourism can be categorized as international and
domestic tourism.

Tourism has two types and various forms. On the basis of the movement of
people tourism categorized into two types. These are following as:

International Tourism

When people visit a foreign country, it is referred to as International Tourism. In order to

travel to a foreign country, one needs a valid passport, visa, health documents, foreign
exchange, etc

Page | 6
Inbound Tourism

This refers to tourists of outside origin entering a particular country. When people
travel outside their host/native country to another country, then it is called inbound
tourism for that country where he/she is traveling. For example, when a tourist
from Indian origin travels to Japan then it is Inbound tourism for Japan because
foreign tourist comes to Japan.

Outbound Tourism

This refers to tourists traveling from the country of their origin to another country.
When tourists travel a foreign region than it is outbound tourism for his own
country because he/she is going outside their country. For example, when a tourist
from India travel to Japan then it is outbound tourism for India and Inbound
tourism for Japan.
Domestic Tourism

The tourism activity of the people within their own country is known as domestic
tourism. Traveling within the same country is easier because it does not
require formal travel documents and tedious formalities like compulsory health
checks and foreign exchange. In domestic tourism, a traveler generally does
not face many language problems or currency exchange issues.

DESTINATION WEDDING
A destination wedding is a wedding that is held in a setting away from your
hometown. Oftentimes a destination wedding and the subsequent honeymoon are
celebrated at the same resort venue.

Many Indian celebrities choose destination weddings and Indians take

inspiration from them. Both domestic and international destinations are
popular for weddings in India. The destination wedding industry in India is
estimated to cross INR 45,000 crore in 2020

UNWTO Definition of Destination Wedding.

“the total of travel activities for a young couple and their possible visitors
to a place where no one intends to marry is a resident of a given region or
resident, and the primary purpose of the trip is to marry” (UNWTO, 2015).

WEDDING

Weddings in India vary according to the region, the religion, the community
and the personal preferences of the bride and groom. They are festive occasions
in India, and in most cases celebrated with extensive decorations, colour, music,
dance, costumes and rituals that depend on the community, region and religion of
the bride and the groom, as well as their preferences. India celebrates about 10
million weddings per year, of which about 80% are Hindu weddings.

Page | 8
TYPES OF WEDDING

Marriages in India are a grand affair and they are held in a unique manner
in the different regions and states. Be it north, south, east or west all the weddings
in India are celebrated with great gusto and fervor. If you haven’t got a chance to
be a guest in any of these weddings, then do check this out and sketch out which
kind of wedding do you want.

There are 15 different type of wedding held in india

1.BENGALI WEDDING

Known for its gusto and pompous celebration, Bengali weddings are incomplete
without the ‘Saat Paak’ in which the bride encircles the groom seven times while
covering her face with the betel leaves. Shubhodrishti, another ritual is followed
after the saat paak in which the bride removes the leaves from her face and the
couple’s eyes finally meets.

2.MALYALI WEDDING

Weddings in Kerela are momentary and doesn’t take much time to wrap up
the function. The Malyali weddings are held in the mornings and the
conjugal ceremony is called ‘Velli’. The father of the bride welcomes the
groom by washing his feet and the marriage is complete when the groom
ties a ‘thali’ or a yellow thread around the bride’s

Page | 9
3. ASSAMESE WEDDING

On the day of the wedding, a bathing custom is followed in Assamese wedding in which
the bride and groom’s mother visit the nearby river to fetch holy water for the bath. In
Assamese wedding, the feast or the reception part is held prior to the marriage
ceremony. Earlier curd, rice, and jaggery were served to the guests but now a lavish
reception party is hosted in which mouth-watering dishes are served.

4. BUDDHIST WEDDING

Since Buddhism is based on leading a simple life, their weddings are also simple and
have a low-key affair. These are no mandatory rules and regulations to be followed in a
Buddhist wedding. The couples get married in a Buddhist temple, licensed as a legal
marriage venue.

5. JAIN WEDDING

Jain weddings are highlighted by the three major pre-wedding ceremonies namely
Lagana Lekhan, Lagna Patrika, and Sagai. Also, Pheras and Kanya Daan are two of the
most notable and important rituals of a Jain wedding.

6. KANNADA WEDDING

During the auspicious time of the wedding, the bride is brought to be seated at
the mandap by her sisters. The face of the bride is covered with a fan made out of
peacock feathers. Afterward, the parents of the bride give away their daughters by
performing a ritual called ‘Dhare Herdu’ followed by ‘Satapadi’ which is completed
by taking seven circles of the holy fire.

Page | 10
7. GUJRATI WEDDING

The wedding affair starts with exchanging Jaimaala’s twice. Unlike other
Hindu weddings, Gujrati’s take four Pheras which are called as Mangal Pheras. During
Mangal Pheras, the couple circles the holy fire four times which symbolizes ‘Dharma’,
‘Artha’, ‘Kama’ and ‘Moksha’.

8.CHRISTIAN WEDDING
The marriage ceremony occurs, the main features being :bride “given away’’ by her
father/family; readings from the Bible; homily; rite of marriage including the blessing of
the rings; exchange of vows and rings; prayers said for the couple & sacred blessing of
the marriage by the minister; signing of the register of marriages and marriage
certificate; Weeding Reception (celebration)

9.KASHMIRI WEDDIND

Kashmiri weddings are very similar to Hindu weddings. In Kashmiri weddings, a

ceremony called ‘Diugun’ is performed which is similar to the ‘Haldihanth Rasam’.
When the groom and his family arrives, both the fathers of the couple exchange nutmeg
as a symbol of their friendship.

10.MAHARASHTRIAN WEDDING

Prior to the wedding trousseau, the ‘Shakhar Puda’ or engagement ceremony

takes place. During the wedding, the couple is separated with a silk shawl.
Thereafter, the ‘Mangalashtak’ is recited and the shawl is removed. After performing a
few rituals, the couple seeks permission from their parents to get tied in the knot,
after having their consent the Pheras are finally performed.

Page | 11
11. MARWARI WEDDING

Pithi Dastoor is one of the cardinal pre-wedding ceremonies which continues until the
wedding day. When the groom arrives at the bride’s place, he has hit a toran that is tied
on the doorway with an aneem stick. This tradition is followed by Pheras and
Kanya Daan.

12. MUSLIM WEDDING

Nikah in Islam is read by two priests and after the consent of the couple, the
pious Nikah Naama is signed. Hereafter, the assembly is addressed with Khutba-tun-
nikah or the marriage sermon. After this sermon, a mirror is placed between the couple,
where their eyes meet each other for the first time.

13.PAHADI WEDDING

The series of activities that happen in Pahadi wedding traditions are as follows: Sagai ,
Mehendi , Sangeet , Ganesh Puja , Suwal Pathai , Duliargh , Vara Satkaarah , Varmala ,
Saptapadi , Pani Grahan , Kanya Daan , and the Vidaai

14. PUNJABI WEDDING

On the wedding day, the bride receives a ‘chuda, the white and red coloured bangles
from her maternal uncle or mama. Followed by this ritual, the Ghara Ghardoli ceremony
takes place in which the bride and groom are bathed in the holy water brought from the
Gurudwara. On the wedding night, the couple exchange garlands and are taken to the
mandap to perform other marriage rituals.

15. SIKH WEDDING

A Sikh wedding is similar to a Punjabi wedding. The only difference being that it
takes place during the day in Gurudwara, where the ardaas are recited.

CHAPTER 4
LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Klaus Schwab, W. E. F (Klaus Schwab, 2016), According to one of the

articles India is renowned for its, vibrant culture and the best places to explore
and its diverse rituals, especially the weddings. Being very potential market,
the opportunity share is very high. It is a lucrative business opportunity
enriches the culture. Indian weddings are getting bigger and better with each
passing year and so is the business involved with it including all other lateral
businesses have huge market to cater. Although the extravagance of Indian
weddings has a historical context, the revolution it has experienced over the
past couple of years has given rise to a new industry that is primarily
dominated by a young and new category of service providers and specialists
who meet rather evolved expectations.

2. (Know India, 2018), In the articles of the government site (Know India,
2018) it is very clear that culture wise Indian weddings are not less than any
festival and every family want to celebrate this as grand as possible. But, with
the recent data available we can assess that gender wise the longing for their
wedding. From the below diagram the current trend of the Indian
wedding can be assumed. A lion’s share of the Indian market is now
preferring the intimate wedding. This is how the concept of destination
wedding are coming into pictures and there is a every passing decade.
Page | 24
Three decades ago, the lavish wedding function that has now become a trend
and may be a compulsion was hardly thought by people. In past the weddings
were happily arranged by all the family members but today the fashion is to
get it done by some agencies and shred all the headache. This raised the
engraved the path of the wedding industry market penetration. Although this
industry arose five-six years ago, this practice was limited to the upper class,
but even middle-class couples are now willing to hire wedding experts to
prepare their marriage instead of making family and friends pitch in.

3. (Pratap, 2017) Writes, the upsurge of wealth has turned the Indian wedding
into a luxurious affair. Each little thing has to be the best from the place, to
the decorations
and the food. And that created an industry worth $40bn. When U.S. nationals
Janet and Michael decided to get married, they choose Jaipur's wedding
destination over Florida and Las Vegas. More surprisingly, the duo also
decided to follow Indian rituals, filled with pandit and pheras, and married in
a Pink City palace.

4. (Indian Express, Delhi, July 13, 2016) According to Indian express,

Department of Tourism started offering wedding packages onboard the
royal Rajasthan on wheels, especially with lake city Udaipur as a wedding
destination. Rajasthan tourism on July 13, 2016 announced the plans to open
up its iconic luxury locomotives like the “palace on wheels” and “Royal
Rajasthan on wheels” for lavish wedding. This will attract the urban people
Page | 25
to enjoy community wedding since the trains are stationed at number of rural
places and are themed accordingly. This will allow a true regional experience
and for this reason, many foreign weddings are happening in Rajasthan,
Gujarat and Karnataka availing Luxury train package. Indians usually prefer a
location-based destination since the Indian rituals lasts for minimum3-4 days,
that will make the luxury train a bit more expensive.

5. WTTC President & CEO, David Scowsill in one of his speech in

May, 2017) weites, it is evident from the list that the most demand in
destinations in India for the purpose of attaining a grand destination wedding
are Italy, Thailand, Turkey and France in chronological order. For an Indian
traveler, the objective surpasses the cost for an upperclass family.
Celebrities are the major trend setters in India, for example recently Indian
Cricket Captain Virat Kohli married Anuskha Sharma in Italy, this
followed the wedding of Indian Actor Ranvir Singh and Actress
Deepika Padukone that also took place in Italy. Earlier number of
celebrities got married in Italy and France. While the middle upper
population choice is Thailand or any other South East Asian countries.
The middle-class segment chooses domestic location over international for the
reason of affordability. The pull factors like the “Palaces” of Rajasthan,
beaches of Chennai and Backwaters of Kerala also acts a drive-in decision
making.
Indian wedding market posing a challenge to the world wherein many exotic
destinations like Goa, Andaman, Puducherry etc. are among the world’s
Page | 26
betting destinations emerging in India. World tourism ranking drives the
motivation of a wed aspirant to locate its wedding destination (outbound
segment) in 90% cases.

6. Paramita Suklabaidya (Wedding Tourism & India, 2008) According

to article, “Wedding is for a day and Marriage is for lifetime.” Wedding
Tourism is when one travels toget married in an exotic location in a unique
manner irrespective of the legalities of this union in their own country or
the destination of wedding. Although the terms Wedding tourism or
destination wedding are more in tune with tourism, the terms wedding
tourism and destination wedding are synonyms. India as a country is one of
the beneficiaries of this new trend. Both NRIs & foreigners are
choosing India as a destination and Indian wedding. The marriage
customs attached with the different regions of the country would also
increase the scope of wedding Tourism as it would give the wedding tourists a
chance to draw plans for their dream wedding by mixing the different
customs, traditions or wedding clothes of different regions, of their choice. In
Indian wedding, the international destination of wedding for getting
married abroad is also referred to as wedding moons by many scholars.
Wedding Tourism is of two types- destination wedding and unique or exotic
wedding. Wedding tourism has uniqueness in destination like one choosing
Hawaii or New Zealand to get married. Exotic wedding is the uniqueness in
the concept like getting married on 90th floor roof top, getting married.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES.

Research Methodology
Research can be defined as systemized effort to gain knowledge. A research is
carried can by different methodology. Which has their own pros and cons.

It, is a way to solve research problem along with the logic behind them thus
when we talk of the research methodology we not only take of research
method but also context of our research study and explain why we are using a
particular method or techniques and why we are not using other so that
research result are capable of being calculated either by the researchers
himself or by others. Research methodology means the method carried out to
study the problem.

Research methodology has following steps:

•To decide the objective of the study.

•To design research design.
•To determine the source of data.
•To design data collection from.
•To determine sample size and sample design.
•To organize and conduct field work.

Page | 28
• To process and analyze the collected data.
•To prepare the research report.

Source of data collection.

Research generally involves two different types of research: primary and

secondary.

Primary research
Primary research is research you conduct yourself (or hire someone to do for
you.) It involves going directly to a source – usually customers and
prospective customers in your target market – to ask questions and gather
information. Examples of primary research are:

•Interviews (telephone or face-to-face)

•Surveys (online or mail)
•Questionnaires (online or mail)
•Focus groups
•Visits to competitors' locations

When you conduct primary research, you’re typically gathering two

basic kinds of information

 Exploratory. This research is general and open-ended, and typically

involves lengthy interviews with an individual or small group.
 Specific. This research is more precise, and is used to solve a
problem identified in exploratory research. It involves more
structured, formal interviews.
Page | 29
Secondary research

Secondary research is a type of research that has already been compiled,

gathered, organized and published by others. It includes reports and studies by
government agencies, trade associations or other businesses in your industry.
For small businesses with limited budgets, most research is typically
secondary, because it can be obtained faster and more affordably than primary
research.
A lot of secondary research is available right on the Web, simply by entering
key words and phrases for the type of information you’re looking for. You
can also obtain secondary research by reading articles in magazines, trade
journals and industry publications, by visiting a reference library, and by
contacting industry associations or trade organizations. (Note: When you
locate the research you want, check its publication date to be sure the data is
fresh and not outdated.)

One excellent source of secondary research data is government agencies; this

data is usually available free of charge. On the other hand, data published by
private companies may require permission, and sometimes a fee, for you to
access it.

 How much does it cost to have a destination wedding in Jaipur

Wondering how much would a decent destination wedding in Jaipur would cost you?
Well we have it all in a breakdown for you. Ideally a 3day wedding in Jaipur with a
guest list of about 150 people would cost you anywhere between 30-60 lakh.
However, the budget of any wedding majorly depends on factors such as the venue, the
number of days of celebration and the number of people invited.

 Venue: The venue for your celebrations plays an important part in deciding your
budget for your destination wedding. Booking the same venue for all your functions
can surely save you some money. Depending upon the scale of your wedding and
your budget, you can easily find a wide variety of budget as well as luxury hotels

Page | 36
 Number of days: Ideally a destination wedding celebration lasts for about 3
days. Try to fit in as many rituals and functions in a day so that you wrap up
the celebration in the minimum time. The more the days of celebration, the
more your budget would increase.

 Guest list: Typically, in a destination wedding, only close family members and
friends are invited. If you are planning for a budget wedding then the guest list
for the same should not go up beyond 100-150 people. However, if you do not
have any budget constraints then the guest list could easily go up as per your
desire.

 Other factors that affect your budget for the wedding are the
photographers, wedding planner, makeup artist or the caterers. There
are a lot of wedding vendors from all across the country on Wed Me
Good. One can easily look for vendors in different categories, filter
them as per your requirements, check their reviews and book them
directly from the portal.

25 lakhs to INR 1 crores. The cost of hotel rooms and food & beverage are the major cost head but there
are many other things which add to your cost. Your budget and guest list majorly influence the type of
hotel you’ll be choosing. To help you start with planning your wedding, I have divided the hotels &
resorts into two categories depending upon their ratings:

Page | 38
 Premium Hotels: Suryagarh is an utterly gorgeous hotel that comes to mind the
moment we say luxury hotels in Jaisalmer. Other hotels in this category include
Jaisalmer Marriott Resort & Spa & Rang Mahal.
 Budget Hotels: If you’re planning a budget wedding, then these will be the sorted
one’s for you, Desert Tulip Hotel & Resort, Fort Raj Wada and many more.

 How to Save Costs When Organizing A Destination Wedding in

Jaisalmer.

 Palace Weddings are possibly the biggest trend of recent years, and we don’t see it
dying anytime soon. After all, what could be better than combining your wedding
celebrations and a royal vacation together? But that doesn’t necessarily mean you
will have to shell out more money. Here is how you can have a destination wedding
in Jaisalmer on a budget-

 Choose your location wisely - A place that looks naturally pretty would mean saving
unnecessary expenses on decor.
 Choose an off - season wedding date - This is a no-brainer. Prices of all services go
down during off-seasons. You will also have better chances to get exciting
discounts!
 Book accommodation and events at the same venue - More possibility of getting
discounts due to bulk booking, and lesser transportation costs! Also, this will help
you save time during the celebrations.
 Book as soon as possible - The sooner you book, the better chances you have to get
cheaper deals. Also, if you make bulk bookings, you’ll be in a better position.
 Keep your itinerary crisp - Do not organize a lot of events - restrict to a 1 to max

Page | 39
3day wedding. And keep your guest list as crisp as possible. We would recommend
about 50 - 100 people.
Save on food and beverages by choosing local dishes and drinks for the wedding. Also
exercise restraint in the number of items on the me.

How much does it cost to have a destination wedding in

Udaipur

 The total cost of your Udaipur destination wedding completely depends and
varies as per your guest list, the number of days of your ceremonies, the decor
and catering requirements, and majorly the venue you pick. However, to help
you with an approximate figure in mind, here’s what the average cost might
look like.
 If you pick up a premium and exotic place like the Jag mandir Island Palace,
the budget per person per night would be around INR 10,000 to INR 12,000,
which would include food, transfer by a jetty, and basic decor. In this case, the
cost for organizing your wedding for approximately 150 guests for two nights
would be INR 3,600,000. And the cost of accommodation in nearby hotels
would be extra.
 But, if you prefer some 5-star hotel or resort like The Leela or Chunda Palace,
which aren’t as royal or historical as the other places, you will spend around
INR 1,500,000 for two nights (excluding accommodation).
 The above cost would just be for organizing your wedding ceremonies and
doesn’t include accommodation, music and DJ, Mehndi artists, theme decor,
makeup artists, or photographer and videographer. We hope this has given you
a clear idea about the Udaipur destination wedding cost.

CHAPTER 7
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion
Analysing all the secondary data and the primary research with a random sample of 100
we have jotted some parameters that play significant role in determining the shift in the
current trend of the Indian weddings and the preferences of this generation. age, gender
and the dwelling area being the most prominent determinant of incorporating a wedding
planner throws a prominent light on the current era of sophistication in arranging a
wedding without a single burden of the same event is increasing as the days are passing.
People also have a new mind set of enjoying the event with closed ones and this
increasing the scope of destination wedding. So, as the analysis goes the opportunity
share of any event planning business is high and they will get to celebrate their leap
bound success in the coming few years.

Recommendations:
Develop a Working Committee as apex body for Wedding Tourism – This could be
under aegis of a leading industry association and shall have representatives from
respective departments of State and Central Governments, Travel Industry and Wedding
Ecosystem. This will forge a better co-ordination amongst stakeholders and ensure
swifter decision making.

Defining Standards – The Working Committee should work together to define

standards in the Wedding Tourism industry. This will ensure a quality service is meted
out to the end-users viz. Couples intending to marry can have a fair idea

Page | 41
of what will be delivered to them at the end. This will also weed out the so-called
fly by night operators.

Defining legal limits for the consumer segment – This appears to be a tricky area but
continues to be the most important area. The correct legal framework may solve many a
problem in the future arising out of legal cases. Appropriate modifications of certain
legal requirements for foreign couples can bring new customers that are unmotivated by
long legal procedures.

Vouch for special incentives for NRI/ PIO’s – The NRI’s/ PIO’s are the major
contributors for this nieche theme of wedding. Hence, the Working Committee should
work for devising a policy to provide special incentives for NRI/ PIO community willing
to get married in prime destinations of India. This special status to be extended to the
Wedding ecosystem players as well.

•Market Research and Intelligence gathering- There is an urgent need to Improve

methods of data collecting and gathering feedback from wedding couples/ decision
makers. This helps destinations collectively and what couples
increasingly want. The results of these could be used to develop and test new models
that describe consumer motivation and business behavior in this specialist industry, as
well as measure customer feedback on the destination wedding experience, identify their
position on offerings and the degree to which the experience met customers’
expectations. Prompt feedback is essential due to the constant change of consumer
preferences. Additionally, tracking the developed markets in wedding tourism and trends
would provide requisite feedback to the stakeholders, especially ecosystem players to
prop up their

28 Wedding Tourism - Destination India services. Including the research and

intelligence body to help wedding companies make business decisions, market and
promote their
Page | 42
products and services, and find their target customers. These resources help tourism
and wedding businesses transform their tourism offerings into the experiences that
will keep visitors coming back.
Skill Development - Staff employed in the tourism and wedding industry need to
be properly trained- from the basics of hospitality management at hotels and
restaurants, speaking more languages to the professional event management at
the high end and serving new markets. Additionally, higher use of technology
has to be percolated down to the lowest level to enable faster communication
and execution support. This can be taken up by professional agencies with a
strict monitoring by the working committee.

Developing Innovative Tools – The Working Committee should be committed to

helping tourism and wedding service providers succeed. Developing industry
tool kits can help small and medium-sized businesses leverage national tourism
and wedding image.

Infrastructure built up- If destination marketing is promoting a wedding

destination, it is crucial that the destination possesses all the advertised
attributes and, moreover additional products and services that needs to exceed
customer’s expectations and influence their repeated visit. As seen earlier, word
of mouth appears to be the most influencing mode of influencing. Hence, this is
of utmost importance.

Extended flight range - Cooperation with airline companies and foreign

governments can permanently or seasonally involve including direct flights to
new destinations, which significantly expands the potential visitor’s group.
