American Nigerian groups wear Sokoto ("show-kowtow"), a pair of loose-fitting trousers, a Buba ("boo-bah") or loose- fitting overshirt, and a cap. Yoruba men wear agbada ("ah- bah-dah"), a flowing robe worn to the ankle. It covers an undervest with no sleeves and a pair of baggy pants. AFRICAN AMERICAN NIGERIAN: DRESS
• The women wear a wide piece of
cloth from below the neck to the ankles. A blouse hanging to the waist is worn over it. A head tie and a thin veil are also worn. Nigerian Americans wear traditional costumes on special occasions such as National Day, October 1. AFRICAN AMERICAN NIGERIAN: DANCES AND SONGS
• Because dancing and music are such an
important part of their culture, Nigerian Americans can brag of a wealth of both traditional and modern music and dance. • At birth and death, on happy and sad moments, and during worship, dancing and music are present. • Traditionally, men and women did not dance together in many Nigerian societies. • This custom has been altered by Western education and influence, but Nigerian Americans who want to preserve their culture continue to practice it. AFRICAN AMERICAN NIGERIAN: DANCES AND SONGS
• In Nigeria, drums are an essential part of both
music and dance. Juju, a slow, contemplative guitar-based sound, is Yorubaland's most well-known musical subgenre. • Highlife music is prevalent in West Africa, particularly Nigeria. Electric guitar, double bass, percussion, brass, vocals, and drums are typically heard in highlife music. • Muslims like to listen to the music of North African roots in Northern Nigeria. Despite the fact that the instruments used in this music vary, trumpets, flutes, long brass horns, frame drums, cymbals, and kettle drums are frequently used. References
