enjoyment
to retell
to answer questions
to gain information
Once you have a purpose you can
decide on a method of reading to use.
 carefully reading and rereading: reading
to confirm meanings and understandings
and to clarify details
 skimming: reading to gain an overall
understanding of the content of the text
 scanning: reading to locate specific
information

• Questioning helps a reader focus
