 Major crisis that the world faces today.

 Occurs due to the discharge of

pollutants.

 By 2050, the challenges will increase.

 Demand for fresh water will be one-

third greater.

 Connection of the Problem to Sustainability:

 Worldwide major threat to water quality.

 Use of pesticides pollutes rivers and lakes.

 80-95% wastewater flows back into the environment. (Miller, 2022)

 Industrial discharges of chemicals also causes pollution.

 The increasing threat of Marine debris.

 Septic tank system is usually for rural

settings.

 Purpose is to remove organic matter.

 Another purpose includes killing of

 Pre-treatment (Screening)

 Primary treatment (Removal of organic solids)

 Secondary treatment (Decomposition of organic solids)

 Tertiary treatment(Bacterial decomposition of

nutrients)

 Disinfection

 Discharge or reuse. (Jones, 2015)

 Solution 2: Stormwater Management

 Stormwater – water from rain or melting snow.

 Sustainable, focuses on improving water quality.

 This management considers drainage in design of cities.

 Effective management provides environmental, economic benefits.

 EEC specializes in stormwater compliance for almost 20 years. (Brown, 2018)

1. Constructed wetlands:
 Built to act like natural wetlands.

 Slow, filter and soak in stormwater.

2. Rain Gardens:

 Have plants to filter runoff water.

 Excessive runoff flows out of the

garden.

 Conclusion:

 Clean water is vital for productive river systems.

 Polluted water doesn’t benefit local economies.

 Fishers spend $45 billion on rivers.(American Rivers,

2019)

 Damages crops, loss of aquatic life.

 Increased rate of waterborne diseases.

 Several filters should be installed.
