Performance boosting Products

  Lean mass builders – Typically sold in protein formulas, mass gainers & are mainly legal
  Stimulants – Fat burners, alertness drinks, raise heart rate and metabolism
  Painkillers – Over the counter paracetamol to prescribed codeine or steroid injections
  Sedatives – Sleep boosting or relaxing effect
  Blood boosters – increase red blood cell count and oxygen carrying ability
  Masking drugs – hide the presence of other; usually illegal, substances
Authority

 UK Anti Doping (UKAD) – Responsible for testing measures and controls within the united kingdom,
Follows ‘THE CODE’ set by WADA and ensures all UK entity's are compliant through listing of banned
substances and random testing of athletes

 International Olympic Committee (IOC) – Promote and maintain ethics and fair play in sport and supporting
clean athletes

 World Anti Doping Authority (WADA) - Scientific research, education for athletes, coaches and staff,
development of anti-doping capacities, and monitoring of the World Anti-Doping Code - www.wada-ama.org
Banned substances

 Anabolic steroids – enhances protein synthesis, recovery and testosterone

 Human Growth Hormone (HGH) – naturally produced hormone which enhances muscle growth

 Diuretics and Masking agents – Flush excess water out of your body and mask other illegal substances

 Beta Blockers – Lower heart rate to allow for a steadier hand – Archery, shooting

What are some of the dangers associated with such products?


Banned Practices

 Blood Doping – transfer of blood; can be your own or another persons, which has been acclimatised to
favourable conditions

 Gene Doping – Gene editing, gene transferring and gene silencing

 Sample Tampering – Editing or altering test samples to falsify the result


What can be done

 Education – Governing bodies and organisations can work closely with athletes and coaches to educate and
inform the benefits of staying clean and the risks associated with performance enhancing drugs and
especially some of the shadier practices
