USES:

• The most common use of the past continuous tense is to talk about something that was
happening around a particular time in the past
What were you doing at 8 o’clock last night? I was
watching television.

I started watching television before 8 o’clock and I

continued watching it after 8 o’clock.

PAST PROGRESSIVE GRAMMAR STRUCTURE
We often use the past continuous and past simple tenses
in the same sentence.

We do this when we want to talk about

a shorter activity that happened
during a longer activity in the past.
• We use the Past Simple and the Past progressive when one action interrupted another in the past. We

use the Past Progressive for the longer action and the Past Simple for the shorter action : In this case we

usually use WHILE, WHEN or AS.

As/ While Tom was driving the road roller, his cellphone
rang.

When I was driving my car, a cat crossed in front of me

 Sam hurt himself yesterday.
