AREAS OF
STRENGTH &
WEAKNESS
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
● Digital Access ● Digital Communication
● Digital Commerce & Collaboration
● Digital Etiquette ● Digital Fluency
● Digital Health & Welfare ● Digital Law
● Digital Rights & Responsibilities
● Digital Security & Privacy
DIGITAL ACCESS
The COVID-19 pandemic made it possible for
all students PK-12 in AACPS to have 1:1
access to a device at all times. All students
were assigned a Chromebook device by the
middle of the 2020-2021 school year.
DIGITAL COMMERCE
When AACPS OIT officials purchased
Chromebook devices they made sure that the
tools being purchased were of good quality and
safe for students to use daily
DIGITAL ETIQUETTE
AACPS has embedded digital etiquette lessons
into their Social Studies curriculum for
students, so that at the beginning of the school
year they spend the first week of school
learning about what digital etiquette is and how
they can practice it safely
DIGITAL HEALTH & WELFARE
While students need help from adults in
repeatedly implementing this they are able to
understand the balance needed. Students
understand that a balance between screen
breaks and activities with and without
computer use is needed daily in the classroom.
DIGITAL RIGHTS
& RESPONSIBILITIES
AACPS has embedded digital lessons into their 3rd
marking period Social Studies curriculum for 5th
grade students that teaches them what rights and
responsibilities are and how they can use them to be
good digital citizens
DIGITAL SECURITY & PRIVACY

AACPS OIT has softwares and strict

precautions in place, so that all AACPS staff
and student devices can remain safe from any
phishing, viruses, or cyber threats.
DIGITAL COMMUNICATION
& COLLABORATION
My elementary aged students (5th Grade) often
struggle to “appropriately” communicate and
collaborate. They often need reminders of their digital
etiquette and ways to appropriately express their
voices and personalities on their digital platforms and
assignments.
DIGITAL FLUENCY
My elementary aged students often have to
retain lots of information and the information is
always changing! At times its difficult for
young students to filter and make appropriate
decisions on their own.
DIGITAL LAW
With all AACPS students 1:1 on devices it has
become increasingly more difficult to track and
discipline for inappropriate use of their
technology and online platforms. This was
especially true during virtual learning during
the COVID-19 pandemic.

HOW DO YOU KEEP ONLINE FRIENDSHIPS SAFE?
LESSON SUMMARY:

The purpose of this lesson is to allow students in grade 5 to

realize that as they are creating “online” friendships they

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
● Resources are offered in multiple ● Student resources are only
languages hard copy - no opportunities
● Age appropriate resources for digital integrations
● Open class discussion opportunities ● No speech - to text options for
different types of learners
● Standards aligned
● Vocabulary centered
● Real-world applicable

LESSON
INTEGRATION
HOW WILL I INTEGRATE
INTO MY CLASSROOM?
At my school the school counselor does monthly lessons and she
usually touches on the topic of online communication. I would like
to use this lesson as a supplemental lesson to add to the topic the
counselor is teaching on. I plan to use this lesson during the
morning meeting block of our day. This would be during our
community circle time.

LESSON
IMPROVEMENT
S
HOW CAN THIS
LESSON BE
IMPROVED?
This lesson needs for materials to be leveled and UDL accessible.
There should be options for text-to-speech resources for lower level
readers. Also, due to 21st century learning skills the resources
should all have digital representation options.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
● Integrate options for digital resources
● Make the quiz digital (i.e. - Google Forms), so that there
can be instant teacher/student feedback.
● Allow for students to have their choice of how to show
their findings of each scenario - this would replace the
venn diagram
