Wetland

Group 3
What is wetland?
• Wetland is a place in which the land is
covered by water, salt, fresh or
somewhere in between either
seasonally or permanently.
• It functions as its own distinct
ecosystem.
• You can recognize wetlands from other
types of land or bodies of water
primarily by the vegetation that has
adapted to wet soil.
What are the different types of wetland?

What kind of species live in wetlands?

• A wide variety of species live in wetlands.

Birds, including ducks, geese, kingfishers
and sandpipers, use wetlands as pits stops
during long migrations, providing them with
protection and food. Mammals like otters,
beavers and even tigers rely on wetlands to
find food and shelter. And of course,
wetlands are home to many types of fish.
Characteristics of Wetland

• Hydrology – there must be water at or near

the surface of the land for a designated
amount of time.
• Soils – must be hydric or saturated with
water to create an anaerobic (free oxygen
environment).
• Plants – must be “wetland plants” meaning
that they acquire lots of water and the
anaerobic conditions that the hydric soil
creates.
Characteristics of Wetland

• Help control flooding

• Provide a habitat for many species
• Coastal wetlands contain both salt
and fresh water
• Vary in size can be as small as a
roadside ditch or cover as much area
as a city.
Why are wetlands important?
• Wetlands serve many roles in our ecosystems:
– Filtering water (removes like pollutants and sediment)
– Protect uplands from floods by temporarily storing some
of the water
– Provide sources of food
– Wildlife habitats
– Creates healthier watersheds by removing particles form
runoff before it reaches the streams
– Prevent erosion when on banks of streams, rivers, and
lakes.
What happens when wetlands are destroyed?

• Destruction of wetlands can cause

many problems such as:

- Increase floods
- water quality problems
- population decrease in plants and
animals that live in wetlands.
