Battle of the

Somme
What happened in it?
North of the Somme River in France, British and French forces
launched a frontal assault on an entrenched German army.
Following a week-long artillery barrage, the still impenetrable
German defenses came under British infantry attack.
When? Where?

The battle had started July 1 st 1916,

and lasted till November 18 th 1916.
It had lasted 5 months and many
people died.
The battle was based in Pas de
Calais on both sides of the upper
reaches of the river Somme.
Who was involved?
How many died?

The battle of the Somme had involved the

British and French forces over the Germans.

There were 300,000 casualties.

The battle is most notably remembered in

Britain and the Commonwealth as an
illustration of the ultimate sacrifice given by
the troops who served throughout the First
World War, despite the fact that there were
many losses on both sides.
What weaponry was used? Who was
victorious?
Both sides used thousands of tons of artillery shells, torrents of machine
gun fire, chemical weapons, flamethrowers, and tanks for the first time
during the course of the fight.
The Germans strategically retreated to the Hindenburg Line in March 1917
rather than continuing to fight over the same territory in the spring as a
result of the Allied triumph at the Somme, despite the horrendous expenses
incurred.
What was the significance of the battle of
the Somme?
It was intended to achieve a decisive victory over the
Germans on the Western front.
However, the resulting battle remains the most painful
and infamous episode of the first world war.
