ORIGIN OF MODERNISM IN LITERATURE:

• Modernism in define as having oblique nature


• Characterized by the variety of features
• It can be traced before it fully emerged as literary movement.
• Experiment, multiciplity of consciousness, urbanization these elements are associated with
modernism.
• It was an international movement.
• It had different expression in various countries and period.
• Depending on individual perspective and interpretation it vary significantly.
MODERNISM’S INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT:

Modernism as a literary movement had its roots is France

Movement then spread to England and America.

Each region contributing its own style and energy.

The book “The Modern Movement” highlight the french influence on Anglo-American Modernism.

Cyril suggests that 1880’s years giving rise to the first generation of modern writers
• Writers from various countries like Eliot, Pounds, Hemingway and many more contributed to the
development of modern sensibility.
• Connolly places the peak of modernism between 1910 and 1925.
• A.Alvarez emphasis on first thirty years of the century.
• Garahan Hough believes that English literature had elements of symbolism around the
World War 1.
MODERNISM IN LITERATURE VIEWS:

• Catholic Anglo American focuses primarily on French and English Literature


• “The Modern tradition” by Richard Ellman.
• He traces modernism back to Romantic era. Their view covers wide range of authors and
Artistics form
• Anglo American critics shares the idea that the heart of modernism lies in Early 20 th
century
• Edmund Wilson book “Axel’ Castle” connects English and American Modern literature to
Symbolism.
• Garaham hough suggeted English language compareable to the Romantic Era.
• Modernism was not confined to Anglo American development but was a part of large
European affairs, Involving writers like Glide, Valery,Thomas mann etc .

MODERNISM’S EVOLUTION AND DEBATE:

• Virginia wolf identifies the year 1910 as as crutial turning point.


• She believed human relation and various aspects changed drastically
• D.H.lawrence believed 1913 as the end of old world
• Richard Elmaan argued 1990 as the starting point of Modernism.
• Harry Levin believd 1922 as the year of modernism.
• Some Critics extended Modernist period into the early 1920s or even later.
• It continued beyound the inter war period into post war art, particularly through surrealism.
MODERN VS POST MODERN DEBATE:

• It give the concept of modernism and its transition into the Post Modernism in the art and
literature.
• Post modernism is described as a new entity emerging from post war art and anti art movement.
• It consist of elements like chance,minimalization,absurd creation, parody,and non linear
narrative.
• Explore the idea of continuing with earlier Modernist movement.
• But some argue that post modernism represent continuation of same artistic tradition
• Critics suggest that Post Modernism is more than just a stylistic shift.
• Critics view it as a form of post-Cultural rebellion
• It is a departure from the humanism and civilization that modernism sought to reinstate.
• Art becomes a form of action and play.
