Liturgical year consists of liturgical seasons which recall and celebrate various events in the
life of our Lord Jesus Christ and life of His followers.
Advent
❖Latin “ad venire” means “to come to”
❖ Begins the Church’s liturgical year
❖ Composed of 4 Sundays and weekdays leading
up to the celebration of Christmas
❖ To reflect and direct our mind and heart to
Christ’s second coming
❖ Prepares us for the anniversary of the Lord’s
birth on Christmas

❖ commemorate the “feast day of
incarnation” or “feast of God
becoming a flesh”
❖ begins with the vigil masses on
Christmas eve and concludes with the
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
(Christmas eve to Epiphany)
❖ in Filipino Culture, it concludes on the
Feast day of Santo Niño
Lent
❖ starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy
Saturday
❖ covers approximately six weeks,
❖ the last week of Lent is the Holy Week starting with
Palm Sunday
❖ preparation for Easter/Resurrection
❖ How do we prepare? pray, do penance, go for
confession, practice almsgiving, and exercise self-
denial
❖ Visita Iglesia or Seven Churches Visitation – pray the
Station of the Cross, one of the devotions that
 Lent
❖ Sacred Paschal Triduum
- Beginning from the evening of Holy
Thursday to Easter Sunday
- Considered liturgically as “one day” of
unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s

the Church
❖ 50 days of Easter to the Sunday of Pentecost
❖ Easter Sunday to the second Sunday of Easter is
called “Octave of Easter” or “eight days”

❖ the Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time
take us through the life of Christ (34 wks)
❖ inspired by the words and deeds of our
Lord and Savior and nourished by the
