NEEDLE STICK INJURY
(NSI)

 Protecting yourself continued…


 Injuries from needles used in medical procedures are sometimes called needle-stick or sharps
injuries
 If you pierce or puncture your skin with a used needle, follow this
first aid advice immediately:
 Encourage the wound to bleed, ideally by holding it under running water
 Do not scrub the wound while you're washing it
 Do not suck the wound
 Inform your supervisor immediately
 Supervisor will inform the HIC department for further action
 HIC will take your blood sample and also give you an injection

PATIENT ROOM CLEANING
ENTERING A PATIENT ROOM

Situation 1
 Step 1 – Knock at the door and announce department & wait for 15 seconds
 Step 2 – If the guest responds enter the room and wish the patient & attendant
 Step 3 - Start the activity that has to be performed with the permission of the patient / attendant
Situation 2
 Step 1 – Knock at the door and announce department & wait for 15 seconds
 Step 2 – If the guest does not respond, knock again and wait for 10 seconds
 Step 3 - Knock again and enter the room announcing the department and wish the patient &
attendant
 Step 4 - Start the activity that has to be performed with the permission of the patient / attendant
CLEANING PROCEDURE –
VACANT ROOM

 Step 1 – Conduct a maintenance check of the entire room & washroom


 Step 2 – Start Dusting the room in one direction – clockwise or anti clockwise
 Step 3 – Make the bed following standard ‘Bed Making Process’. Use
approved chemical (Baccilocid/ Hospital Approved) for Bed dusting
 Step 4 – Dry Mop the room and collect the garage in the existing garbage bag
in the room
 Step 5 – Clean the washroom following the ‘Washroom Cleaning Process’
 Step 6 – Remove the garbage bag and replace with a fresh garbage bag
 Step 7 – Wet mop the room and switch off all the electrical switches
 Step 8 – Come out of the room and close the door
CLEANING PROCEDURE – OCCUPIED ROOM

 Step 1 – Knock the door and announce your department


 Step 2 – Open the door, again announce your department
 Step 3 – Enter the room and check with the patient for room cleaning, if the patient is ok, proceed
 Step 4 – In case the patient wants the room to be cleaned later, check for the convenient time
 Step 5 – Strip the old used Linen and make the bed with fresh linen
 step 6 – Dust the room in one direction – clockwise or anti clockwise
 Step 7 – Dry Mop the room and collect all the garbage, remove the existing bin bag and replace with
fresh one
 Step 8 – Clean the washroom following the ‘Washroom Cleaning Process’
 Step 9 – Replace all amenities
 Step 10 – Wet mop the floor and finish the cleaning, use R2 chemical for wet mopping
 Step 11 – Before leaving the room, check if the patient needs assistance with any thing else
OT ROOM CLEANING

 Cleaning Procedure – OT Room Deep Cleaning


 Step 1 – Place signage (caution board) outside the OT room
 Step 2 – Dust the OT room, followed by washing the wall tiles. Switch of the AC
 Step 3 – Pack all medical equipment, AC vent & Fire Extinguisher for starting Fogging Process
 Step 4 – Do fogging in the room using either Virkon, Bacillocid or any other Hospital approved
chemical
 Step 5 – Leave the room closed for 2 hrs.
 Step 6 – Open the room & clean the room again, start with dusting and then clean all equipment
 Step 7 – Dry Mop the room and collect all the garbage, remove the existing bin bag and replace
with fresh one
 Step 8 – Wet mop the floor and finish the cleaning, use Approved Hospital Chemical for wet
mopping
REST ROOM CLEANING

 Cleaning Procedure
 Step 1 – Use R6 to clean the WC bowl from inside using a WC brush.
 Step 2 - Soak WC with R6 for 10-12 mins for effective result
 Step 2 – Use R1, from a spray bottle for cleaning the outside of the WC bowl, seat cover and
other fixtures
 Step 3 – Use R3 to clean and wipe the mirror
 Step 4 – Spray R1 on the entire bathroom hard surface, including wall tiles and wash basin
counter
 Step 5 – Scrub the floor and clean with water. Wipe Dry all the surfaces
 Step 6 – Replenish toilet roll, tissue paper, liquid soap and other amenities
 Step 7 – Clear waste, close the door
BLOOD SPILL CLEANING

 Spill is of two types


1. Minor Spill - Spillage less than 30 ml
2. Major Spill – Spillage more than 30 ml
Note; Cleaning to be done only if the spillage is 30 ml.
If the spillage is more than 30 ml then call the infection control people
BLOOD SPILL CLEANING

 Cleaning Procedure – Minor Spill


 Step 1 - The First Step is to barricade the area with a signage (caution board)
 Step 2 - Collect the spill kit
 Step 3 - Wear PPE, i.e. Rubber Hand gloves & Face Mask
 Step 4 - Cover the spill area with paper napkins, toilet paper or newspaper. Wait for it to soak well & discard the
soiled material into the yellow waste bag.
 Step 5 - Pour 2% Hypo Chloride Solution ( 20 ml in one litre of water on & around the spill area). Allow the solution
to soak/react for 10 min.
 Step 6 - Immediately wipe up with cloth/paper towels or absorbent pads.
 Step 7 - Remove the soiled material and discard into the blue waste bag
 Step 8 – Clean the area with R2 & Dry Mop
 Step 9 - Take off PPE and discard them
 Step 10 – Wash hands as per the procedure
1. Note - Soiled material should not be touched by bare hands. Use forceps, tongs or gloved hands
BLOOD SPILL CLEANING

Cleaning Procedure – Major Spill


 Step 1 - Alert all people in the area to evacuate
 Step 2 - Call ‘911’ and activate ‘Code Orange’
 Step 3 – Notify Safety Officer & HIC staff
 Step 4 – Keep People away
1. Once this is done, clean the spill in the same procedure as done in minor spills, only with the permission of your
supervisor and concurrence of the HIC team
WHEEL CHAIR SAFE HANDLING

1. While taking the wheel chair check the following and ensure that it’s
in good condition

2. Lock / Safety Belt / Wheel / Tipping Lever /

3. Caster Wheel / Arm Rest / Foot Rest

4. Hold the chair properly and make sure the patient feels comfortable.

5. Fasten the safety belt to the patient without fail

6. Make sure that the wheel chair is locked before moving

7. While taking the wheel chair on the ramp, turn around and go
backwards

8. After shifting is shifting completed make sure to clean the chair before
placing it back in the designated area
