SIMPLE PAST
➤ This tense is used to talk about
completed actions in the past.
➤ We form the simple past by
adding -d or -ed to the simple
form of the verb.
➤ Formula: Subject+ verb+ed/d +
rest of the sentence.
Ex: Jaime watched T.V yesterday.
IRREGULAR VERBS
➤ Irregular verbs do not use the -ed
or -d form for the past.

➤ Irregular verbs either change or


remain the same.

➤ The verbs “be” and “have”


change to “was/were” and “had”
NEGATIVE SENTENCES IN THE PAST

When creating negative sentences


add “did not/ does not”-
“didn’t/doesn’t” before the verb
and use the verb in the BASE
FORM.

➤ I don’t like to eat broccoli.

➤ She doesn’t drive to her office.

WHEN DO WE USE IT?

To indicate that the duration of an


activity was short.

➤ You ate quickly today.


➤ Did she sing at the party?
➤ He did not go to the beach with
his friends this year.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?

To indicate that an activity occurred


as a habit or routine over a period of
time or at intervals in the past.

➤ Her niece studied economics from


2012 to 2017.
➤ Jake read the Iliad three years ago
and again last year.
➤ Whenever we went to the beach,
we stopped at Burger King to eat
breakfast.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?

To indicate that an action started and


finished at a specific time in the past.

➤ She watched TV.


➤ They went to Orlando last year.
➤ We ate a hot dog and fries this
afternoon.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?

To talk about a list of completed


actions in the past.

➤ I finished work, took the bus, and


went home.

➤ The cat woke up, stretched, drank


water, and went back to sleep.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?

To talk about a habit which stopped


in the past. We can use “used to”.

➤ I used to study French when I was


a child.
➤ She used to practice violin at
school.
➤ They rode their bikes on the park
when they were young.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?

To describe past fact that are no


longer true.

➤ She was shy as a child, but now


she is very outgoing.
➤ He didn’t like onions before.
