Definitions
 The word ‘whistle’ means…

 Capable of producing the prescribed ‘Blasts’
 Complied with spec per Annex 3
 The term ‘short blast’ means…
 A blast of about one second duration
 The term ‘prolonged blast’ means…
 A blast of from four to six seconds duration

channel or fairway (in compliance w/Rule 9)

A vessel nearing a bend or an area of a
channel or fairway where other vessels may
be obscured by obstructions….
Nearing a bend and unable to see beyond
would sound one prolonged blast.
If in range of audibility would reply with one
prolonged blast.

One whistle only shall sound if distance apart >

Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility
Vessels at Anchor
(a) Power Driven Vessel (inc. Pilot vessel)
 At interval of not more than 1 minute
 Ring Bell rapidly for 5 sec. (Bell to be forward)
And immediately thereafter
 Sound the Gong rapidly for 5 sec in the aft part

May in addition sound - _ - warning to approaching vessels

(b) Vessel aground (All Vessels)
 Bell + Gong + 3 Separate and Distinct Strokes on the Bell + Any other.
(c) RAM and Fishing
No Bell & Gong Signals but sound _ - -
(interval 2 mins)

Rule 36
Signals to attract attention…
 If necessary
 Any vessel may make Light or Sound Signals that cannot be
mistaken for any signals authorised elsewhere in these Rules.

 May Direct the Beam of her Searchlights in the direction of the danger

 Any Light not to be mistaken for any Aid to navigation.

 Avoid High intensity intermittent and revolving Lights.
 Signals – Light, Sound and Beam should NOT embarrass any
vessel.
