• NREM – non rapid eye movement, three stages:
− NREM 1 - falling asleep

• Alternating REM and NREM
phases
• N1→N2→N3→N2→REM
• Takes about 90 minutes
• Repeats 4-6 times a night

Older Adults (65 years and over) 7 to 8 hours
Sleep deprivation
• Short-term - bad concentration, memory, mood, slow reactions
• Long-term – risk of diabetes, obesity, depression

• Record – 11 days without sleep
