STROKE

Stroke is a term used to describe an abrupt onset of FND that


lasts at least 24 hours and is presumed to be of vascular origin.
Stroke can be either due to focal ischemia or hemorrhage.
Clinical classification of stroke
Transient ischemic attack :
Abrupt neurological dysfunction due to cerebral ischemia where symptoms last less than 24
hours and the patient recovers completely.
Stroke in evolution (progressive stroke):
The symptoms worsen gradually or in a step wise pattern over hours or days .this is due to
increasing size of infarction (usually due to gradual occlusion of a vessel by a
thrombus),hemorrhage or cerebral edema .
Completed stroke :
The neurodefecit is complete from the beginning ( usually within 6 hrs) and persists for weeks
and months , and often permanently.
Clinical features:
Slurring of speech ,LOC
Hemiplegia, hemiparesis
Deviation of mouth
Deviation of tongue and uvula
Facial palsy
Perioral numbness
Sensory loss
Gait apraxia
Vision disturbances
DIPLOPIA ,VERTIGO,VOMITING
Urinary incontinence
