Subject:Well logging
Topic : Calculate saturation of water by using SP
log
WATER SATURATION :

• Water Saturation is fraction of water in a given pore space. It

is expressed in volume/volume, percent or saturation units.
Unless otherwise stated, water saturation is the fraction of
formation water in the undisturbed zone
WATER RESISTIVITY:

• Water resistivity or Rw, is a critical component of log analysis

in calculating water saturation using the Archie equation. Rw
can be measured from a sample of formation water taken
from the zone of interest at the well site or a nearby well, or
it can be calculated using spontaneous potential (SP) log
data.
CALCULATE WATER RESISTIVITY OR WATER
SATURATION FROM SPONTANEOUS POTENTIAL LOG :

• Estimate formation temperature.

• Resistivity of the mud filtrate (Rmf) at measured temperature, found on the log header.
If only mud resistivity (Rm) is given, convert it to Rmf as explained below.
• Bottom-hole temperature (BHTbottom hole temperature) and total depth, found on
the log header.
• SP reading from a porous zone at least 20 ft6.096 m 240 in thick. (A bed thickness
correction is necessary if the zone SP is measured from is less than 20 ft6.096 m 240
in thick.)
ESTIMATE FORMATION TEMPERATURE :

• Formation temperature (Tf) can be estimated by using the following

formula:

• where:Ts = average surface temperature

• Df = depth to the formation
• BHTbottom hole temperature = bottom-hole temperature (found on log header)
• TDtotal depth = total depth (make sure BHTbottom hole temperature and TDtotal depth are from
same log run)
AN EXAMPLE OF CALCULATING RW BY USING
THE SP METHOD :
• Rm = 2.5 Ω-m at 70°F294.261 K
21.111 °C
529.67 °R

• Rmf = 2.0 Ω-m at 70°F294.261 K

21.111 °C
529.67 °R

• Hole diameter = 8 in.

• Surface temperature = 60°F288.706 K

15.556 °C
519.67 °R

• BHTbottom hole temperature = 164°F346.483 K

73.333 °C
623.67 °R at 10,500 ft

• From the log:

• SP deflection = 70 mV

• Bed thickness = 24 ft

• Short normal resistivity = 65 Ω-m
