Talk about a possible future.
We use the first
conditional to talk
about a situation and
result in the future.
IF THEN

If it is hot tomorrow, I’ll go to the beach.


I’ll go to the beach if it is hot tomorrow.

In a conditional sentence, there are two clauses:


IF clause and RESULT clause

FUTURE POSSIBILITIES
You can use other forms of the future in the result clause.

In a first conditional statement,


we always use the simple present
If we arrive early, we will have dinner together.
If you don’t listen to me, you won’t know how to complete the task.

However, you can use other forms


of the future in the result clause

If it snows tomorrow, we will go skiing.


If there are a lot of people at the restaurant, we might eat na another café.
If he gets good grades in science, could study medicine at a university.

Remember the first


conditional expresses a
future possibility!!
BUT...

If we are certain something will happen


we use WILL in the result clause.

If we are less certain, use MAY, MIGHT


or COULD in the result clause

subject + will/may/could + base form of the verb


If we take public transportation, we’ll save money.

WHICH ACTION MAY CAUSE THE OTHER ACTION?


Taking public transportation may cause us to save money.

WILL THESE THINGS DEFINITELY HAPPEN?


No, but probably.
If air pollution gets worse, more people may get sick.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF AIR POLLUTION GETS WORSE?


More people may get sick.

WILL THIS DEFINITELY HAPPEN?


No, but probably. (less chance to happen)
