Sample Strategy for Supportive Paragraphs
1. The first sentence usually presents the topic that you will address in the paragraph.
a. The topic sentence should present the claim, or main idea, that you will develop and support within the
rest of the paragraph.

2. In the several sentences that follow, provide evidence regarding your topic and explain how this
information supports your topic or claim.
a. After the topic sentence, present specific evidence that supports that topic Explain how each piece of
evidence logically supports the claim or topic. Remain focused and specific, relating only information
relevant to your topic sentence.

3. After proving the point you presented in your topic sentence, conclude the paragraph with a
transitional sentence that leads readers to the next paragraph
a. End with a transitional sentence that shows how the main idea of this paragraph relates to the main idea of
the next paragraph.
Types of Support
Support – Writers use different types of support to argue or prove their points. The type of support a writer uses
depends on what is appropriate to support their ideas. Of course, more than one type of support can be used.

For example:
• Expert Opinion – an opinion/statement from an expert in the field. Must be correctly referenced.

• Examples – something to illustrate the point that is trying to be made.

• Analogy – writer compares the situation to another situation.

• Facts and Statistics – use true statements or numbers to support the ideas. Must be correctly referenced.

• Reason – use reasoning or logic to argue the point.

• Emotion – the writer makes an emotional appeal to the reader.

• Personal Experience – the writer shares a personal experience about the topic (if appropriate)

Using Outside Sources
There are three ways to use outside information to support your writing: (1) You can quote it, (2)
you can summarize it, or (3) you can paraphrase it.

Direct Quotations
According to Smith, “The point is not that the state is in retreat but
that it is developing new forms of power…” (Smith, 2009, p.103).
Paraphrase/Summary
Smith (2009) claims that the modern state wields power in new
ways.
