Helping Others Makes Me Fit Better: Effects

of Helping Behavior By Newcomers and Co-

worker-attributed Motives on Newcomers’
Adjustment

Presenter Name: Lucia

The Topic: Helping Others Make
Employees More Fit
• Newcomers' willingness to help others has a positive
effect on their long-term behavior (i.e., their
commitment to the organization).
• It leads them to master their tasks and engage socially
with their co-workers.
• When employees believe that newcomers are helping
out of a genuine desire to support others, their
immediate adjustment outcomes are superior to when
they believe that newcomers are assisting to make a
good impression.
• Once the newcomer integrated with the group, everyone
became closer. 2
Interesting Information

• Newcomers benefit from others by receiving resources

like advice, opinions, instruction, and enlightenment.
• Relationship-building activities from newcomers are
more favorably associated to information-sharing
behaviors from mentors when they see a profound
resemblance with the newcomers.
• Mentor information exchange improves newcomer
adjustment (i.e., role clarity and job performance)
• Corporate socialization helps newcomers adapt to their
workplace and become insiders.
• Newcomers need resources to fit in

How Can it be applied
to Improve My Life

socialize with colleagues because socialization process
makes cohesion of the team stronger.

relevant information.

newcomers to help them adapt, take their time to learn
and master their role.
