COUPLING

Prof.Md.Khaled Khalil
What is coupling?
Couplings are mechanical elements that
‘couples’ two drive elements (shafts)
which enables motion to be transferred
from one element to another.
Couplings do not normally allow
disconnection of shafts during
operation, however there are torque
limiting couplings which can slip or
disconnect when some torque limit is
exceeded.

5
Function Of Coupling
The primary purpose of couplings is to
join two pieces of rotating equipment
while permitting some degree of
misalignment or end movement or
both.
By careful selection, installation and
maintenance of couplings, substantial
savings can be made in reduced
maintenance costs and downtime.

7
Rigid coupling

Rigid couplings are used when the

shafts are virtually collinear and when
they should remain in a fixed angular
relation with respect to each other.
Rigid couplings are most successfully
used where the shaft is relatively
flexible, as a line shaft, and its speed
is low.

Flange Coupling

A driving coupling
between rotating shafts
that consists of flanges
(or half couplings) one of
which is fixed at the end
of each shaft, the two
flanges being bolted
together with a ring of
bolts to complete the
drive.
1
Type of Flange coupling

1
Flange Compression Coupling
A means of connecting
two perfectly aligned
shafts in which a slotted
tapered sleeve is placed
over the junction and two
flanges are drawn over
the sleeve so that they
automatically center the
shafts and provide
sufficient contact pressure
to transmit medium loads.
12
Ribbed compression coupling

Ribbed compression
coupling are also known
as sleeve or muff
Couplings. In this case
shaft ends are coupled
together and abutted
against each other which
are enveloped by muff or
sleeve. A gib head sunk
keys hold the two shafts
and sleeve together..

14
Flexible coupling
Flexible couplings are usually used to
transmit torque from one shaft to
another when the two shafts are
slightly misaligned.
 They can accommodate varying
degrees of misalignment up to 3° and
some parallel misalignment. In
addition, they can also be used for
vibration damping or noise reduction.
15
Flexible coupling (Contd.)

In rotating shaft applications a flexible

coupling can protect the driving and
driven shaft components (such as
bearings) from the harmful effects of
conditions such as misaligned shafts,
vibration, shock loads, and thermal
expansion of the shafts or other
components.

Morflex coupling

The intermediate elements

are four rubber “biscuits” held
in c center piece. Each hub is
attached to two opposite
biscuits, allowing angularity,
which flex torsionally and
axially. No metal to metal
contact. Good absorber of
vibrations, including torsional.

18
Gear type coupling

The hubs have integral

external teeth, perhaps
crowned that mesh
with internal teeth in
the casing through 360
degree as in splined
connection. Flexibility
is obtained by play
between the teeth.

19
Flexsteel coupling

The spring member,

which transmit the load,
is inserted into the
grooves in the hub which
widen toward the centre.
When load is applied, the
spring is bent along the
arc of these grooves,
whose curvature is such
that the spring stresses
are safe.
20
Roller Chain Coupling

The two opposing hubs

are made with integral
sprockets over which a
double roller chain is
fitted. The drive is
through the chain.
Flexibility is obtained by
lateral play of the fit of
the chain over the
sprocket teeth. Relatively
inexpensive type.
21
Oldham coupling

Oldham couplings are a

three piece design
comprised of two
aluminum hubs press fit
onto a center disk.
Torque transmission is
accomplished by mating
the slots on the center
disk to the drive tenons
on the hubs.

22
Universal Joint
A universal joint is used to
connect shaft whose axes
intersects, that is , whose
angular misalignment is
permanent. It consists of
a pair of hinges located
close together, oriented at
90° to each other,
connected by a cross
shaft.

23
Pin bush coupling
The coupling consists of
two hubs that are
identical in construction.
The pins and pocket
holes alternate on the
outer pitch circle. The
torque is transmitted via
the steel pins with their
taper elastomer rings
and the corresponding
bores in the bush hub.
24
Pin bush coupling
As a result all kinds of shaft
misalignment, for example
caused by inaccurate
alignment of the driving or
driven elements, is
compensated for reliably and
vibrations and shocks are
compensated for excellently.
The coupling is maintenance-
free and is used in general
engineering and the pump
industry, conveyor technology,
etc.
