Outlines: General rules Abdominal echo/ CT Pelvis echography Retrograde cystography MRI CT Barium enema Procedures with contrast General rules: Before any procedure make sure that females is not pregnant by asking about LMP. If LMP is suspicious, report it to the physician. Patients who will undergo X-Ray (not echo) should be prepared by releasing all metal object from the radio site . List of procedures Echo Abdomen and Pelvis CT MRI Retrograde Cystography UGI Barium enema/ IVP FNA Abdominal Echo / CT: The patient must be NPO for at least 8hours. For pediatric patients : NPO for 6hours. For neonates or babies<1year:NPO for 3hours. Pelvic echography (echo pelvis): The patient must have full bladder before the procedure: Conscious patients should drink at least 1.5L of fluids and feel full bladder. Unconscious patients could have a physician’s order of running IV with palpation of full bladder (globe vesicale). If patient has an indwelling catheter (Foley cath.) The catheter must be clamped 1.5hour simultaneously with the increase of fluid intake. Retrograde cystography: The patient must have a Foley catheter inserted 30minutes before the procedure MRI: The patient should be free of the following: Pace maker Stent for < 6month Credit card Jewelry Metals Batteries Screws Bottle oxygen CT: No need to keep patient NPO before CT except for CT abdomen. Barium enema & IVP: The patient must have empty colon. (Fleet enema at bed time, another one in the morning/ fluid diet or low residue diet in the day before the procedure+ fleet enema in the morning/ SS enema in the night before the procedure…. Procedures with contrast, (CT, MRI, IVP, Barium enema) : Large gauge IV canula, no additives in the IV fluid. Patient NPO >12hours . Creatinine level taken and within normal value. Diabetic patients should withhold biguanides for 48 hrs after any procedure with contrast. Ask about previous allergies. THANK YOU
