Atomic Mass

Atomic Mass Unit (amu)

1amu = 1.660539 x 10-24 g
Example:
Carbon-12
Mass of 1 atom of C-12 = 12.00 amu =
1.996257 x 10-23g
Average atomic mass

Average atomic mass = (atomic mass x atomic

abundance) + (atomic mass x atomic abundance)
Example

C-12 with the Percentage C-13 with the Percentage

abundance of 98.93% abundance of 1.07%
Example 2

• A potassium has three stable

isotopes- potassium-39,
potassium-40, and potassium-41. Atomic

Avogadro’s Number and the Mole Concept

Avogadro’s Number (NA) is a constant used to quantify the number of

particles of an element (atom,ions) or compound (molecule, formula
units)

Amedeo Avogadro (1776-1856) –the Avogadro’s number has a value of

6.022141 x 10 23 which is commonly rounded off to 6.022 x 10 23.

The mole (symbol mol) is the term used to refer to the quantity of
particles of a substance (atoms, ions, molecules, or formula units)
Avogadro’s Number and the Mole Concept

• IUPAC defined the mole as the amount of substance of a system, which

contains as many elementary entries as there are atoms in 0.012kg of carbon.
• One amount of C-12 has a mass of 12.00amu or 1.992657 x 10-23g. One mole of
C-12 atoms has a mass of 12g. Contributed by a total of 6.022x1023 atoms.
1mole = 6.022x1023 particles
1mol Au = 6.022x1023 atoms
1mol Au3+ = 6.022x1023 Au3+ ions
1mol CO2 = 6.022x1023 CO2 molecule
1mol NaCl = 6.022x1023 NaCl formula units

will be the mass in grams of one mole of Na3PO4? (atomic
masses: Na=23amu, P= 31amu, O=16amu)
