Learning Objectives:
# Understand the physical phenomena around the moving bodies in a
fluid with a free surface
# Understand the flow conditions in which the propellers operate
# Calculate the resistance of ships by means of approximate models
(empirical, statistical, computational)
# Learn how to make experiments and evaluate the experimental data
acquired in a towing tank
# Learn the geometry of a conventional propeller and understand the
hydrodynamic principles of how a propeller generate thrust and torque
# Learn the essentials and details of propeller design
# From resistance to propulsion; calculate the required engine power to
propel the ship at the design speed.

Grading:
Homeworks: 15 %, Midterm project: 10 %, Laboratory: 5 %, Midterm
exams: 25 %, Final Exam: 45 %
The grading system will be based on a (relative) normal curve
distribution in the peer group. But in any case, students can’t
get DD or higher marks unless their overall grades are
40/100 or higher.
Course Material:
• There are no official text book, but a couple of text books
recommended to be studied as reference material
