Lesson 4: Archaeological Artifacts

The National Museum of the Philippine houses the


most important ethnographic, anthropological and
archaeological artifacts unearthed in the Philippines that date
back to prehistoric times.
Artifacts pertains to a usually simple object (such as a
tool or ornament) showing human workmanship or
modification as distinguished from a natural object.
Evidences of Philippine ancient art include artifacts
unearthed in archaeological excavations. Among them are
earthenware, body ornaments and jewelry and textile
fragments.
Burial Jars
The Manunggul jar, one
of the most treasured parts
of the burial jar collection
in the Philippines, was
recovered inside a chamber
of the Manunggul cave in
Palawan.
Balangay

The Balangay serves


as proof of early
Filipino
craftsmanship and
seamanship.
Ancient Sculpture

Bulul are sculptures


made by the Ifugao. It is
a carved wooden figure
used to guard the rice
crop by the Ifugao people
of Northern Luzon.
Okir

Sarimanok is the
legendary bird of
Maranao who
originated from
Mindanao. It has
become a universal
symbol in Maranao art.
How to take good care of ancient arts?
1. Restore and conserve the old precious objects.
2. Make sure to keep them clean and properly maintained.
3. Remember the value of old objects. You can keep them and start
a collection, particularly old sculptures, jewelries, jars and other
old objects.
4. You may also donate them to museums.
