There are many holidays celebrated around the world during the fall and winter.

Lohri
• Lohri is a holiday celebrated in India.
• Many Hindus and Sikhs celebrate Lohri.
• It is celebrated on January 13 each year.
• Lohri is a celebration of the harvest period and the
end of winter.
Lohri Traditions
• On the morning of Lohri, one
tradition is for children to go
door-to-door, singing and asking
for treats and money.
• Bonfires are an important part of
the Lohri celebration.
• Dancing is a fun tradition shared
by young and old alike!
St. Lucia Day
• St. Lucia lived in Sicily, Italy.
• She would secretly bring food to those in jail.
• St. Lucia would wear candles on her head so her
hands were free to carry food.
St. Lucia Day Traditions
• St. Lucia’s Day is celebrated around the world.
• It is a treasured holiday in Sweden. In some
families, the oldest girl in the family dresses in a
white dress with a red sash and a wreath of candles
on her head. The children serve their parents warm
rolls and coffee in bed.
Heritage Day
• Heritage Day is a holiday
celebrated in South Africa.
• It is celebrated each year on
September 24.

Heritage Day is a day for people to
celebrate the cultural heritage of all
South Africans.

Heritage Day celebrations.
Hanukkah
• Hanukkah is a Jewish
celebration.
• It commemorates the
rededication of the temple in
Jerusalem.
• It is also known as the
Festival of Lights.
Hanukkah Traditions
• Hanukkah traditions include lighting the candles of the Menorah and
family dinners.
• Playing dreidel is a fun game many children play on Hanukkah.
Christmas
• Christmas is when Baby Jesus
was born in a stable in
Bethlehem.
• The Nativity, or the birth of
Jesus, is an important Christian
holiday.
Christmas Traditions
• One Christmas tradition for
many people is setting up a
Nativity scene.
• Many people exchange presents
with family and friends.
• Holding a Christmas dinner is
another common tradition.
• Many children wait for Santa to
visit on Christmas Eve.
Las Posadas
• Las Posadas is a holiday to remember the journey made by Joseph
and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
• The holiday is from December 16 - 24.
• Many people in Mexico celebrate Las Posadas.
Las Posadas Traditions
• In many cities, during the nights of Las
Posadas, a child dressed as an angel
leads people through the streets.
• The group travels to homes and knocks
on each home's door. At every home,
the group is turned away. On the last
night, the group is invited inside.
Kwanzaa
• Kwanzaa is a celebration of
African heritage.
• The celebration began in the
United States in 1966.
Kwanzaa Traditions
• One Kwanzaa tradition is lighting
the seven candles of Kwanzaa.
• Each candle represents a different
principle of Kwanzaa.
• On the sixth night, family and
friends usually have a big feast.
New Year’s Eve and Day
• New Year’s Eve and Day celebrate
the end of the year and the
beginning of the next year.
• It is a time of celebration of the
past year, and hope for the
upcoming year.
New Year’s Traditions
• A famous New Year’s Eve
tradition is staying up until
midnight when the new
year begins.
• Many people have parties and
celebrations with family and
friends on New Year’s Eve.
Sometimes the parties include
confetti, streamers, and
even fireworks.
