REFERENCING QUOTATIONS

►How should you use quotation marks to indicate quotes?


►Single quotation marks are always use – except for long
quotations.
►What are the reference requirements for in text quotations?
►(author, year of publication: page number).

►What are the rules for long quotes?


►Indent quotations of 24 words or more – these quotations
are not counted in the overall word count for an essay.
►As Schechner says,
► Efficacy and entertainment are not so much opposed to each
other; rather they form the poles of a continuum (figure 4.4). The
basic polarity is between efficacy and entertainment, not
between ritual and theater. Whether one calls a specific
performance “ritual” or “theater” depends mostly on context and
function. (Schechner, 1988: 130)
THIS TITLE – WHAT TITLE?

►How should you indicate a title?


►Titles for plays, performance, books and journals are all
indicated using italics eg. King Lear, Not I, Negative Space.
►Titles of theatre groups are in plain text: eg. Forced
Entertainment.
►Article titles, chapter titles are indicated using single
quotation marks eg ‘A Deep Oder Called Turbulence’.
