the Design Process

What Is a Design Process?

The Design Process is an
approach for breaking down a
large project into manageable
chunks.
Architects, engineers, scientists,
and other companies use the
design process to solve a variety
of problems.
Use this process to define the
steps needed to tackle each
project, and remember to hold to
all of your ideas and sketches
throughout the process.
Design
Process
1. Define the Problem
2. Collect Information
(research)
3. Brainstorm and
Analyze Ideas
4. Develop Solutions &
Build a Model
5. Present Your Ideas for
Feedback
6. Improve on your
Design
1. Define the

Problem
Identify a problem
– You can’t find a solution
until you have a clear idea
of what the problem is.
• Create design
requirements
(specifications)
– Criteria & Constraints
(Rules and Regulations)
• Design Brief
Define the Problem
• Design Brief
– A written plan that identifies
a problem to be solved, its
criteria, and its constraints.
– Used to encourage thinking
of all aspects of a problem
before attempting a
solution.
2. Collect Information
• Research
• Collect sketches,
take photographs
and gather data to
start giving you
inspiration.
3. Brainstorm & Analyze
• Begin to sketch,
make, and study so
you can start to
understand how all the
data and info you’ve
collected may impact
your design.
• Drawings that provide
technical information
necessary to produce
a product.
4. Develop Solutions /Build a
Model
• Take your preliminary
ideas and form multiple
small-scale design
solutions.
• Construct a testable
prototype
• Plan prototype testing
– Performance
– Usability
– Durability
5. Present your Ideas for
Feedback
• Present your ideas to
as many people as
possible: friends,
teachers,
professionals, and
any others you trust
to give insightful
comments.
6. improve your design
• Reflect on all of your
feedback and decide
if or to what extent it
should be
incorporated. It is
often helpful to take
solutions back
through the Design
Process to refine and
clarify them.
