PARTS OF SYNOPSIS

PREPARATION OF SYNOPSIS
 The synopsis for a graduate program can be divided into following sections:

1. Title

2. Abstract

3. Introduction/ Need of the project

4. Review of Literature

5. Material and Methods

6. References
TITLE
 It should be comprehensive to reflect the main contents and subjects of
the research plan to be undertaken by the student.

 ABSTRACT

 Abstract is single paragraph. It usually starts with the first 2 - 3 sentences


about the importance of the studies/project followed by analytical
methodologies.

 Types of data collection, statistical treatment of data, results and finally a


conclusion about the findings.
INTRODUCTION/NEED OF THE PROJECT
 It should contain the general subject statement, the orientation, setting,
and foundation of the study but does not look like a general literature
review.

 The objective and foundation of studies must be described.

 It should contain a statement of the problem to be investigated so that the


reader (s) can proceed with the nature and purpose of research in mind.

 It should overview briefly the scope, aims and general characters of the
research.
INTRODUCTION/NEED OF THE PROJECT

 The statements should be supported with references.

 To summarize, it can be stated that the introduction should provide a

general account of a particular topic on which one has to work.


REVIEW OF LITERATURE
 Students must search relevant articles from different sources like library,
scientific journals, data bases, major supervisor, senior students and
others actively working in his/her selected area/topic of studies before
writing this section.

 Selection of resources should be based on critical analysis.

 Minimum 20 original papers should be read and have hard copies of that
before writing this section.

 Every major concept must be supported with the reference.


MATERIALS AND METHODS
 It should contain elaborative experimental methods, analytical

procedures and statistical techniques to be followed, each supported with

appropriated literature citation.

 Student must have discussion with a statistician at the planning stage of

experiment.

 Research facilities should also be considered before planning any study.


REFERENCES
 An acceptable format of references should be followed.

 Students are advised to consult GS 7 to know about the time to time


changes in rules and regulations of the university.

 Students defend the synopsis at a semi-final stage. After incorporation of


discussed and agreed suggestions, the synopsis is to be signed by the
student, supervisory committee and the statutory bodies, like Chairman,
Deans, etc.
