Chapter 2: Drawing Sketches with Autodesk Inventor

Autodesk Inventor is a feature-based,

parametric, solid modeling mechanical
design and automation software.
Before you start creating the solid 3D
components in Autodesk Inventor, you
need to understand the software. To
design a component in this software,
you need to create all its features one
by one.

Working with the Selection of Planes

As discussed earlier, to invoke the Sketching environment, you need to
select a plane as the sketching plane. Selection of an appropriate plane is
very important for defining the right orientation of a model.

Specifying Units
As discussed earlier, you can invoke the Part modeling environment with a
default template (Metric or English), which contains a predefined unit
system and drawing standard for creating a design. However, you can
further modify the default unit system at any point of your design for any
particular file. For doing so, click on the Tools tab in the Ribbon and then
click on the Document Settings tool in the Options panel of the Tools tab.
The Document Settings dialog box appears. In this dialog box, click on the
Units tab to display the options for specifying the units.

Specifying Grids and Snap Settings

Grids help you to specify points in the drawing area for creating sketch
entities correctly and act as reference lines. By default, the display of grids
is turned off in the drawing area. You can turn on the display of grids in the
drawing area and specify snap settings to restrict the movement of the
cursor at specified intervals.

spacing in the Y direction.
Grid Display
The snaps per minor field of the Grid Display area of the dialog box is used
for specifying the number of snap points between each grid.

NOTE: The major grid lines are darker in color, whereas the minor grid lines
are lighter and are displayed inside the major grid lines.

Creating a Line Entity

A line is defined as the shortest distance between two points. You can
draw a line by using the Line tool.

TIP: You need to press the TAB key to switch between the boxes of the
Pointer Input for specifying the coordinates. After specifying the
coordinates in the Pointer Input boxes, you need to press the ENTER key.

Chapter 2: Drawing Sketches with Autodesk Inventor

NOTE: If you move the cursor horizontally or vertically after specifying the
start point of the line, the symbol of horizontal or vertical constraint appears
near the cursor, respectively. The symbol of constraint indicates that if you
click the left mouse button to specify the second point of the line, the
corresponding constraint will be applied. You will learn more about
constraints in later chapters.

TIP: As Autodesk Inventor is a parametric, 3D solid modeling software where you can
draw a sketch by specifying points arbitrarily in the drawing area. Once the sketch
has been drawn, you can apply dimensions to specify the length and angle of the
line. You will learn about dimensioning sketch entities in later chapters.

within the Part modeling environment. To invoke the Sketching
environment, you need to select a plane as the sketching plane. After
invoking the Sketching environment, the chapter discussed specifying
units, grids, and snap settings. It also discussed in detail about various
methods for creating lines, arcs, circles, ellipses, rectangles, slots,
