For the game on Slide 8 of the PowerPoint, children will need to be sitting in a circle. The aim of the
game is for children to clap a steady pulse. Often, children find this difficult and get faster so they will
need support with this. You could use a metronome to help keep the steady pulse. If you don’t have a
physical metronome, online ones are available. For the activity on Slide 10, you will need to clap different
rhythms for children to copy. You could use simple word phrases, such as jelly on a plate. For more ideas,
check out our Copycat Rhythm Music Activity Cards.

Pulse
Put two of your fingers on the side of your neck. Can you feel a
gentle throbbing? It is your heart beating which sends a wave
across your body. This is called your pulse.

You can also feel your

pulse by placing two

Pulse in Music
Pieces of music also have a pulse. It is a steady beat that keeps
going through a piece of music without getting faster or slower.
Sometimes, the pulse is called the beat.

or patterns does each rhythm make you think of? Can you clap a rhythm for your
partner to copy? You could clap a familiar sentence or even the pattern of
