A Quick Glimpse…
Active vs. Passive Immunization
Designing Vaccines
Whole-Organism Vaccines
Purified Macromolecules as Vaccines
Recombinant-Vector Vaccines
DNA Vaccines
Synthetic-Peptide Vaccines
Mulvivalent Subunit Vaccines
Key words
VACINATION : This is the act of getting a vaccine to
produce immunity to a specific infection or disease
IMMUNIZATION: becoming immune to a specific infection
or a disease , typically through vaccination
Innate immunity : this the body's first line of defence against
germs entering the body. It responds in the same way to all
germs and foreign substances, which is why it is sometimes
referred to as nonspecific immune system
Acquired immunity: this is adaptive immune system also
known as the acquired system or specific immune system is a
subsystem of the immune system that is composed of specialised
systematic cells and processes that eliminate pathogens or
prevent their growth.
Two Types of Immunization
Passive Immunization
Methods of acquisition include natural maternal antibodies, antitoxins,
and immune globulins
Protection transferred from another person or animal
Active Immunization
Methods of acquisition include natural infection, vaccines (many types),
and toxoids
Relatively permanent
Acquisition of Passive and Active
Immunity
Passive Immunization
Can occur naturally via transfer of maternal antibodies across placenta to fetus
Herd Immunity
Measles Epidemic
Herd Immunity
Factors affecting herd immunity
Environmental Factors: crowded conditions, seasonal variations
When enough people are vaccinated, chance of germ infecting the non-
immunized population is small
2. Development of
immunological memory
Role of Memory Cells
Depends on incubation period of pathogen,
These are lymphocytes play a central role in the generation of
s protective immune response in many microbial infentions
Purified Macromolecules
Polysaccharide
Toxoid
Recombinant Antigen
Recombinant-Vector
DNA
Synthetic Peptide
Multivalent Subunit
Whole-Organism Vaccines
Single immunizations
ex: Rate of reversion of Sabin Polio vaccine is one case in 4 million doses
Inactivation
