Understanding the Skeletal System

The skeletal system consists of 206 bones and connective tissues that connect them. It performs mechanical functions like protection, shape, and movement. It also performs synthetic functions like producing blood cells in the bone marrow. Additional metabolic functions include mineral storage, fat storage, and acid-base balance regulation. The skeletal system has axial bones like the skull and appendicular bones like the arms and legs. Common diseases include arthritis, osteoporosis, rickets/osteomalacia, tendonitis, clubfoot, bursitis, spina bifida, leukemia, bone cancer. A healthy lifestyle supports skeletal health through diet, exercise, avoiding risks.

SKELETAL SYSTEM

SKELETAL SYSTEM

The adult human skeletal

system consists of 206 bones, as
well as a network of tendons,
ligaments and cartilage that
connects them.
FUNCTION OF SKELETAL
SYSTEM
A. Mechanical Function

1. Protection
2. Shape
3. Movement
B. Synthetic Function

Synthesis of blood cells –

The major synthetic role of bones is to produce
blood cells. The bones themselves are not
capable of doing this. Instead, they house the
bone marrow, which
contains Hematopoietic stem cells, capable of
producing blood cells.
C. Metabolic Functions

1. Mineral storage
2. Fat storage
3. Role in acid base balance
PARTS OF THE SKELETAL

Rib cage Long Short

degrees
Coccynx Less movable More movable

Skeletal System Diseases
1.ARTHRITIS

2.OSTEOPOROSIS
3. RICKETS OR
OSTEOMALACIA

4.
TENDONITIS
5. CLUBFOOT

6. BURSITIS
7. SPINA BIFIDA

8. LEUKEMIA
9. BONE CANCER
How to keep your Skeletal
System Healthy?
1. Eat calcium-rich foods.
2. Eat foods with vitamin D to
assist in calcium absorption.
3. Perform at least 30 minutes of
weight-bearing exercise at least
twice a week.
4. Avoid smoking and drinking.
5. Discuss potential side effects of
medication with your doctor.
6. Protect the body
