S I think my biggest fear was being homesick. I remember

going to camp asking the camp counselor if I could go home. Of course, I did not leave the camp, but I remember the feeling of being scared. I told my parents that I did not want to go to another camp again! I think it was the first time I was alone in a group of people whom I did not know and wasnt sure what to do.

Were you ever mentioned in the newspaper? Why did you choose your profession?

Over the years, I have been involved in various events and had my picture taken or articles written about different events that I was a participant. I was often on TV for these events.

I taught elementary school for 34 years as a fourth , fifth, and sixth grade teacher plus ten years in our gifted and talented program called PACE. I do not know for sure why I chose to be a teacher as I decided when I was about your age. I do know that there were many fewer choices for women when I was in college but the reality did not matter as this was something I needed to do.

S Both sides of my family came to America in the 1700s.

You have many relatives that fought in the Revolutionary War. One of the oldest standing homes in Pennsylavania was built by Hans Herr and you can trace your family to his son, Benjamin Herr. All the families came to America for either economic or religious freedom. The early families arrived from Germany though several branches originated from other areas in Europe. When I am in Germany, I often see their names on hotels, shops, or restaurants. On many trips people have come up to me and started speaking German!

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I think I am most proud of your Dad and Aunt Beth and all our grandchildren. Each of you have special talents and have used them well. I can not take all the credit for this. Each of them have special gifts and they use those gifts well. Professionally as a teacher I love seeing my students as adults and knowing that I played a positive role in their lives. I also started our gifted and talented program that is still in place today. It was exciting being a pioneer in a field that we needed, but had to sell it to the community.
