Ioan Botezatorul
(Saint Ioan)
• Ioan Botezatorul also named Saint Ioan (Sfantul Ioan) is one of the central figures of Christianity and Islam,
preacher and baptist on the banks of the Jordan River; the forerunner, herald, and baptist of Jesus of
Nazareth. It’s celebrated on the 7th of January after the New Year that was celebrated on the night of the 31 st
of December and his birth is celebrated on 24th of June.
Birth

• The first episode of Luke's Gospel relates that in the days of Herod Antipas, king of Judea,
an angel announces to the righteous Zechariah, priest from father to son and advanced in age, while he was
in the Temple of Jerusalem for incense, that his prayer had been answered: his wife Elizabeth, barren and
advanced in age, descended from priests, she will bear a child whose name was supposed to
be John. Zechariah cannot believe what the angel says and, unable to speak, goes out of the temple. After a
while, Elizabeth becomes pregnant and keeps herself hidden for five months, after which she receives the
Visit of the Virgin Mary.
Adolescence, youth and maturity

• The child grew and strengthened in spirit, Luke continued, and went into the wilderness, where he remained
until the day of his appearance to Israel.
Baptism of repentance
• He began his sermons in the Judean desert in the 15th year of the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. At
that time Pontius Pilate was procurator of Judea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, Philip his brother was ruler
of Ituria, and the bishops were Anna and Caiaphas. John exhorted the people to repent: "Repent, for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand!" and they, confessing their sins, were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
• His baptism was the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, the Gospels record. John the Baptist
had come to give the people the knowledge of salvation, which lies in the forgiveness of sins thanks
to God's mercy, says the evangelist Luke.
