SAT Punctuation Rules

Grammar questions account for approximately 50% of the questions on


ACT English and 25% of SAT Reading and Writing (give or take a few
percentage points)

Independent and Dependent Clauses
• Independent Clause: Can stand alone as a sentence.
• Dependent Clause: Cannot stand alone.

• Separating sentence elements

Set off non-essential information

Semicolons;
• Connect closely related independent clauses

Separate items in a series with internal
commas

Colons:
• Introduce a list or explanation

Introduce a quote or example
• "She had one goal: to finish the marathon."
• Capitalization and Punctuation
• After placing the colon, follow a few simple rules to punctuate the
quote.
• * Rule 1: the colon should be followed immediately by quotation
marks.
• * Rule 2: the first letter in the quotation should be capitalized.
• * Rule 3: any punctuation at the end of the quotation should be inside
the quotation marks.
