Disk Subsystem
Disk Subsystem

• A disk subsystem is a storage subsystem that supports only disk

devices. Generally, disk subsystems are outside of the computer to
which they are attached.

• An external disk subsystem connects to a computer through a SAN

(Storage Area Network) or some other mechanism.
Disk Subsystem

• The two main factors that determine how quickly your disk
subsystem will respond to requests are the average disk access
time on your hard drive and the speed of your disk controller.
Disk Subsystem

• When writing data to disk, the OS writes only to the controller, so

high-speed writing demands a very fast controller. When reading,
data is transferred from the disk to the controller, so disk access
speed is critical.

• The main advantage of using a disk subsystem is the utilization by

centralizing disk storage. We can also expand storage dynamically.
