Example Problem:

An exterior wall of a building comprises of a 20 cm layer brick wall [k=0.7 W/m(C)] followed
by a 5 cm layer of plaster [k=0.48W/m(C)]. What thickness of rock wool insulation of
k=0.065W/m(C) should be added to the wall to reduce the heat loss through the wall by 60% ?
Example Problem: Figure shows the wall of a furnace.
The brick wall of thickness 5 cm (k = 0.69 W/m(0C) is provided with
insulation [k=0.05 W/m(0C)] which is enclosed by gypsum sheaths
[k=0.9 W/m(0C)] of 4 cm thickness on either side. The insulation is
fixed to the brick wall by (2x4) wooden studs [actual dimension
(4.13x9.21 cm)] of k =0.15 W/m(0C). Estimate the heat loss and
overall heat transfer coefficient of the wall. Also determine the R value
of the wall.
