SPEED OF SOUNDS
Speed of a sound wave
 Refers to how fast the disturbance or wave is passed from particle
to particle ;
 Defined as the distance in which a point on a wave travels per unit
of time;
 It is often expressed in unit of meters/seconds ( m/s);
 The speed of sound also depends on the elasticity and temperature
of a material .
Remember :
 Sound travels fastest in solids
 Sound travels slowest in Gases;
 Solid and liquid are much less compressible and have greater
elasticity the sound travel faster .
 The higher temperature of the medium , the faster the speed of
sound
SPEED OF SOUNDS
 For every degree rise in temperature , there is an increase
in the speed of sound .
 The speed of sound in the room temperature is at 0 °C is
around 331 m/s.
 The speed of sound increases by 0.60 m/s with every
increase of 1°C
Equation/formula:
v= 331 m/s + (0.6m/s /°C x T
v=speed
T= temperature in °C
SPEED OF SOUNDS

Equation/formula: v= 331 m/s + (0.6m/s /°C ) x T

Problem Solving Example : Given T= 30°

v=331m/s + (0.6m/s / °C) x 30 °C
v= 331m/s+90.6m/s /) x 30
v=331m/s+(18m/s)
Ans : V= 349m/s
SPEED OF SOUNDS
PROBLEM SOLVING EXAMPLE:
What is the temperature of air if the speed of sound is
346m/s
Formula : v= 331 m/s + (0.6m/s /°C ) x T
Given : v= 346m/s
346ms= 331m/s + (0.6m/s / °C ) x T
346m/s -331 m/s = (0.6m/s / C) xT
15m/s = (0.6m/s / C ) x T
15m/s / 0.6m/s/ C =T
Ans : 25 °C =T
